On a 64-bit multiarch system, we have this:

Code: [Select]
The following packages will be REMOVED:

  libtool libxft-dev linux-headers-3.16-2.towo.2-siduction-amd64
  linux-headers-siduction-amd64 python-dev python2.7-dev zlib1g-dev
The following packages have been kept back:
  cpp-4.9 gcc-4.9 gcc-4.9-base libasan1 libatomic1 libc6 libc6-dbg libc6-i386
  libcilkrts5 libgcc-4.9-dev libgcc1 libgfortran3 libgomp1 libitm1 liblsan0

32-bit has no problem with d-u.

@ayla your post has made me check a second 64-bit multiarch system.  On this one:

Code: [Select]
root@suzdesk:~# apt-get dist-upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Calculating upgrade... Done
The following packages have been kept back:
  phonon-backend-vlc
The following packages will be upgraded:

  netcat-traditional phonon phonon-backend-gstreamer python-debian python-six python3.4
  python3.4-minimal vcdimager virtuoso-minimal virtuoso-opensource-6.1-bin
  virtuoso-opensource-6.1-common vpnc-scripts whois xinit
78 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded.
Need to get 70.8 MB of archives.
After this operation, 1,175 kB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n] n
Abort.
root@suzdesk:~# dpkg --print-foreign-architectures
i386
root@suzdesk:~#

So this means the d-u issue is not a general problem for all 64-bit multiarch systems.  Maybe it is ONLY for my main desktop system.   :'(

@ayla I see that your d-u upgraded phonon-backend-vlc, but on my second system that package was kept back.  Possibly it is only the difference of time for the North American mirrors to sync.  We should give it some more hours of waiting and then see what happens -- @tuxic is also in my time zone.

Right. At first I thought my problem was vlc from DMO:
Code: [Select]
# apt-cache policy phonon-backend-vlc
phonon-backend-vlc:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 1:0.8.0-dmo2
  Version table:
     1:0.8.0-dmo2 0
        500 http://www.deb-multimedia.org/ sid/main amd64 Packages
     0.8.0-1 0
        500 http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable/main amd64 Packages

But that is not the real issue -- it is this:

Code: [Select]
root@imerabox:/# apt-cache policy libc6:i386
libc6:i386:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 2.19-10
  Version table:
     2.19-10 0
        500 http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
root@imerabox:/# apt-get install libc6:i386
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 libc6 : Breaks: libc6:i386 (!= 2.19-11) but 2.19-10 is to be installed
libc6:i386 : Depends: libgcc1:i386 but it is not going to be installed
Breaks: libc6 (!= 2.19-10) but 2.19-11 is to be installed
libdom4j-java : Depends: libmsv-java but it is not going to be installed
libxft2 : Depends: libfontconfig1 (>= 2.11) but it is not going to be installed
E: Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.

Which results from my need to use skype only on this one system, and skype needs libc6:i386, libasound2:i386, libgcc1:i386 and some other i386 libraries.  Today I let apt-get rip out libasound2:i386 and skype for the purpose of investigating this issue, but if it doesn't get sorted by Sunday night, skype will have to go back on with apt-get -f install, and the more recent 64-bit packages will have to come back out.  Such is life with skype.

Hi,

I made a D-U this afternoon ( Shanghai time ) and it went smooth thru. However after a reboot no more music with amarok. So checking around and changed the phonon backend from gstreamer to  Phonon VLC backend.
All good now. But still wondering why it does not work with Gstreamer backend.

The following packages have been upgraded

This morning (US Eastern) libc6:i386 and libgcc1:i386 are installable with no conflicts, and after that skype can be installed with dpkg -i followed by an apt-get -f install.  So we are past the blockage.

Maybe you have to think about using "debdelta" if you didn't already.
I only have access to the net via umts with 10Gig traffic/month so i use it.
It is also a bit faster to make a dist-upgrade and safes bandwith ;).
