ifupdown orphaned in debian
« on: 2015/06/01, 23:44:56 »
after the latest problems with ifupdown i take a closer look at the debian bugtracker and found this: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=786902

For me that sounds like ifupdown will not be in the next siduction release anymore - one is free to use it as long it works, but i think the glory days of ifupdown are over.

Not so fast :)

Seems a couple devs will be collaborating on it so looks like ifupdown could well be morphed into ifupdown2. So it looks like ifupdown will live on in some form as it is useful on the systems that do not use systemd as an init system.

This collaboration will probably be done in Devuan. I am not yet sure, if that fork is going anywhere.

Ugh, I really need to memorize more systemd syntax. Hopefully, the new systemd equivalent is as intuitive/easy as:
Code: [Select]
ifup eth0
ifdown eth0

Will then siduction ever collaborate with the devuan team in certain cases?

What could such a case be? Devuan and the rest of Debian will drift apart more and more over time (if Devuan ever really materializes and then outlives it's first release by a year)

@Devil, like in cases where event mainline Debian were to ever orphan some important package while Devuan picks it up.

That will mostly be 'dead horses' that we do not really like to ride.

Devuan despises Debian and does not trust it, the majority of its developers and its community. So same will go for siduction. I have been sitting in their channels since they opened and have been called a troll at least 50 times, probably more. That NEVER happened to me in any other channel. So no, I do not think there will be much collaboration.
