[EN] Perfect install but not booting into Siduction
« on: 2022/05/30, 14:06:39 »
I downloaded the latest ISO (siduction-21.3.0-wintersky-kde-amd64-202112231751.iso) yesterday and copied it to my Ventoy key, rebooted installed and was informed the install went perfect, but after reboot ended up booting right into Manjaro. Rebooted into bios to check which drive had priority and switched it to the drive with Siduction on it and rebooted, but this time it bypassed Siduction and boot to my Ventoy key.  I've checked the drive with Siduction on it and the boot part ion looks fine and the / partition looks fine. Any thoughts on why the Siduction boot loader might being by passed and thus not booting into Siduction? Thanks

Siduction install included a boot partition and installed Grub so it should of configured Grub to boot right to Siduction. I should not have to configure Manjaro's boot loader to take me to Siduction. That said I installed XeroLinux and I.m loving it, and no issue with it setting up Grub correctly.

You could put the image on an empty usb-key and  see if that boots, and then go from there. I never used Ventoy, so I have no idea what the issue could be.

I'm revisiting this even though it's been awhile. I have some questions before I attempt to do anew install.

I noticed in two review videos that when they went to install and allowed it to have the entire drive it didn't show it creating a boot partition. If it's a BTRFS install on a system that has no other OS that's fine cause I know one can install without a boot partition depending on how the particular distro is setup. I want to make sure since I have XeroLinux and Manjaro on one drive and Siduction will be on it's own drive that Suduction will create a boot partition besides the OS partition.

Next I noticed in one of the reviews that Flameshot is installed and I'm wondering if it's what is used by default for screenshots? I would prefer Spectacle.

And lastly are the nVidia drivers installed or do I need to do it after landing on the desktop and after doing the initial updates?

Thanks for any and all information and help with my questions.

Spectacle is installed and waiting for you on print key. If you go for another try, we built some fresh images today. https://forum.siduction.org/index.php?topic=8679.0.

We also have os_prober activated, that was deactivated in a lot of distros not long ago. So siduction should be picked up after install. NVIDIA stuff is totally above my pay grade. :)

OK I will one of your new images to see if that plays any nicer with my hardware. The install I did the day before yesterday gets so far after rebooting after the install and still does not land on the desktop. This is something about Siduction that does not like to play nice with common hardware. I have never had any OS not boot to it's desktop after install other that Siduction. Thanks for the reply and the info much appreciated.

OK the new ISO did the trick. At this point I'm assuming something installed during installing the previous release broke the system. The only issue now is Synaptic really doesn't have that much of my software I usually install regardless of claims that it's one of the best installers out there. Example I had to find tutorials for Vivaldi, Vivaldi-snapshot, and Chrome.

You have some misunderstanding of what Synaptic is. Synaptic shows you any package available from the repos, just the same as apt (search) on the command line would do. It is not a application "store" but merely - to stay in the analogy - one of many different hallways to the same warehouse.

That said, I assume the tutorials you found would mention why they even exist: Vivaldi and Chrome is both proprietary software and therefore not included in Siduction or any other Debian based distribution. Hence Ubuntu, Linux Mint here.

The way XeroLinux and Manjaro offer those is fundamentally different:

1) XeroLinux has the AUR pre-activated, which on the one hand offers you more software but on the other hand puts you in the risk of getting unmaintained, user gerenated "packages" which don't have any quality checks done. It's a good source for getting stuff, but you should both know what you're doing and check things you pull from there by yourself.

2) Manjaro goes the same way for Chrome, see above for the risks. For Vivaldi they have a deal with Vivaldi Technology AS, the company developing the browser and connected services. It is safe to assume that Manjaro GmbH & Co. KG, the company, earns money for any Vivaldi installation. That's not a bad thing per se, but explains why they offer Vivaldi pre-packaged in their official repos.

Synaptic is just a front end for apt. Eye candy really. Apt comes built in with all the Debian verified software and the Siduction bits. There is a lot more available if your willing to trust but verify it yourself. You just need to add the sources.list or install a one off .deb. Again, this falls on the responsibility of the user.

That may be so but sometimes Synaptic comes hand to at lease get the correct name of a file or program and then install it through Konsole.  I made a list of sites that I have install items via the commandline using their tutorials. As for .deb files yes I've installed a few without any issues.

What devil referred to is, that we're not encouraging to use Synaptic, Discover et al which is written in our manual: https://manual.siduction.org/sys-admin-apt_en.html#why-use-apt-exclusively
