k3b Kopierproblem und gefixter root-dolphin
« on: 2018/01/06, 00:16:37 »

https://forum.manjaro.org/t/executing-dolphin-as-root-is-not-possible/22566/2

Hi dibl,

yes k3b is working correctly after setting the permissions of cdrdao and wodim right. My post was thought as an hint if poeple getting the same error after updating.

And.. uhm yes, it also was a rant because kde maintainers stopped my normal ways to handle such difficulties the fast way. (looking for for a smiley with a big gun... hmm, nothing here  :()

Ahh, OK!  I don't know what happened to the permissions on your files, mine have never been touched.

Yes, I am very familiar with the issues posted by @melmarker.  I too am learning the joys of "sudoedit".

I have LXQt on an older Dell laptop and it is a very nice, light DM -- make your "lxsu" symlink and you will be in business for sure.

@ayla - i'm currently thinking about some "special" packages for enthusiasts - openSuse has them as standard (reverted - can't run as root - the cause of Martins sensible "fuck you and never talk about KDE anywhere .." answer)

Btw - not the way to answer user requests and complaints

LXQt on an older Dell laptop and it is a very nice, light DM -- make your "lxsu" symlink and you will be in business for sure.

Right :P - and such things like file managers or editors don't run as root will never get merged in LXQt - and nitpicking - LXQt is a DE, not a DM 8). To be clear about - it is not very clever to do some things, we can try to educate people about. But  hell, f***ing no, we never will forbid things like that root runs and edits. If we really want to educate people about, we would make it optional and disable it by default so it is up to the user. And thats it - everyone is entitled to do not so smart things and even if it results in data loss or wrecked things - we as upstream might have our own thoughts about, but will never force it as the only "right" way ...

Edit: @ayla or anyone - if this permission problem is happend again, please file a bug in debian before fixing that - thanks.

they aren't a little arrogant, are they?

"... but I think it is a good idea to educate people about sudoedit..."

compulsorily educated people... LOL

You are right Melmarker when you say "disable it by default so it is up to the user", but the user has to have the choice.

Special packeges, sounds good, I assume you mean this "fix" as seen on the Antergos link?

As your suggestion to file a bug report: I thought about that, but I have no idea since when this permissions where set wrong because I seldom copy CD's any more, so it might be really outdated.

I have LXQT now as a second system, indeed KDE now is the second system, LXQT is grubs default and I will have a look how it is behaving. For the moment I would say: Not so bad :D

Thank you all for the new release

It is not so difficult to set an "EDITOR" environment variable, and then use sudoedit.

[POLITICS] But it is just one more thing to make Linux more difficult than it needs to be for the private desktop user who would rather leave Windows and MS.  MS and Apple won the desktop wars by making Windows and Mac easy.  Many Linux DE developers didn't learn that lesson, ever. [/POLITICS]

No, of course not, poeple can learn that, but as you said, it makes Linux more difficult.
That makes the borders higher for poeple to start with linux, yes.

Even for me as an expierienced user it is at least annoying to change my ways of getting things done, not because there really is a need to do so -we often did, we're on sid- but someone decides so because there could be a need in some cases.

Educate the poeple using linux for my understanding would be to make them sensible for the cases where it could be a risk to run x-applications as root, not to force them never to do it  just because thats the easier way.
When I am at home in my secure network, just using applications provided by my debian and siduction mirrors, where is the risk in doing whatever I like with my box? Okay, besides setting it on fire and leave it alone.

In the light of what is just happening, malicious java-script, that infects your computer from your browser or a web-app would be very pleased to find you running apps as root to start a Spectre attack on your kernel memory. just sayin'…
