The system was updated yesterday, so this is a new situation.  The issue may be limited to multiarch 64-bit systems because there is no such problem on a 32-bit system.

Well .....

A different 64-bit, multiarch system is updating correctly with no drama.  So.  Perhaps there is a PEBKAC issue here.  Time to paste the d-u output into a text document so I can put it back together afterwards.   :P

The problem appears to be related to libasound2:i386 and its dependencies.  These packages are depended on by skype, so that is why I use them.  There is a conflict between some of them, and the other packages (gimp, ffmpeg, vlc, kaffeine, etc.) that were pulled out. It looks like dmo has a newer version of libavcodec55:i386, but not of libavcodec-extra-55:i386, so that is apparently holding up the show.  Here's the apt-get output, FYI:

Code: [Select]
root@imerabox:/# apt-get install libasound2-plugins:i386

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created

The following information may help to resolve the situation:

Need to get 2,806 kB of archives.
After this operation, 47.7 MB disk space will be freed.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n]

Edit: I commented out the dmo source, and was able to reinstall skype's dependencies, and then skype.  I can live without gimp and the others for awhile, until the conflicts are resolved.

Try to live without dmo :P

Right.  When it is working good, I love it.  Today .... not so much.

BTW, there also seems to be an issue with the libumfpack5.4.0 package, which is a dependency of libgegl-0.2-0 (which is a dependency of gimp).

Code: [Select]
root@imerabox:/# apt-cache policy libumfpack5.4.0
libumfpack5.4.0:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: (none)
  Version table:
     1:3.4.0-3 0
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
root@imerabox:/#

Edit:  but you can get it and its dependency libamd2.2.0 from stable, and then libgegl-0.2-0 will install and then gimp will install.
