[EN] "Calendar Reminders" - How to STOP it from autostarting?
« on: 2024/12/20, 03:45:48 »
Hello Folks,

On the System Monitor OVERVIEW page, I found that near the botom of the page, that "Calendar Reminders" is hogging up about 1 GiB of system memory

Since I don't use the Siduction/KDE built in Calendar for appointments, I do NOT want the Reminders App to be started at all.  I searched this Forum and the Manual, in addition to all the "usual" places (system settings, autostart, calendar configuration, panel configuration) but couldn't find any switches to prevent autostarting this app.  This leads me to belive I'm gonna have to do surgery on a system .conf file.

Can someone shed some light on how to prevent autostart for "Calendar Reminders".  Thank you in advance and Merry Christmas.

BUMP !

Any advice on how to disable start up?  Now using 1.2 Gb of 4 Gb of system memory.  Really want to disable.  Thoughts?  Thanks.

Google says you can stop it with akonadictl, or even remove akonadi-calendar:

https://forum.manjaro.org/t/calendar-reminders-high-ram-consuming-process/156185/3

I haven't done this myself -- no guarantee.

Thank you for this advice and  link.   No Success with the following.  Are other SIDUCTION users also finding (in System Monitor) that ~1GB RAM is consumed by "Calendar Reminders"?

============
d@d-virtualbox:~$ sudo akonadictl stop
[sudo] password for d:
D-Bus session bus is not available!
KCrash: Application 'akonadictl' crashing... crashRecursionCounter = 2
KCrash: Application Name = akonadictl path = /usr/bin pid = 7061

Best!

I'm getting warmer...but not there yet.  Found this link:
https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/how-can-i-disable-calendar-reminders/75984

The command terminal commands looked good in the link...BUT...I couldn't find the exact file the article speaks of
(/etc/xdg/autostart/org.kde.kalendarac.desktop ~/.config/autostart)

The closest filename I could find in my SIDUCTION was:
/etc/xdg/autostart/org.kde.kalendarac.desktop

So, I modified the line that cooresponded to the line change in the link (using nano editor) as below:
X-KDE-autostart-condition=kalendaracrc:General:Autostart:false

File was saved normally, but on reboot, the "Calendar Reminder" shows up and takes up RAM when I checked the System Monitor.

What am I missing?  Thanks in advance.

Do you want to try

Code: [Select]
apt remove --purge akonadi-server?  Of course this will be the end of KDE PIM functions.

Hmm

Part of me wants to try it...
Would need to to a system backup "just in case".
Going the 'near nuclear' option you are suggesting may create issues far beyond Calendar reminders and the KAddressBook.

What really surprises me is that a) there isn't an easier way to do this and b) more people aren't screaming about the absurd amount of RAM being used for such a 'feature'.

Thank you...and stay tuned while I 'muddle' over this.

Self Cure...

Here we are many updates later....and the CALENDAR REMINDERS shows up in the AUTOSTART menu.  A simple click on the X stops this memory hog from starting up.

Why oh why didn't this entry show up when I originally started this post?  Wouldn't have needed to start a thread if it did.  Is it just me...or are quirks like this something everyone experiences and...  <ahem> as MicroSoft would call it..."a feature"?

I still LOVE Siduction...but guess I'll have to accept it...warts and all...  Just that those warts can drive me crazy at times.
