[EN] [Solved] XFCE live has a black screen at runlevel 5
« on: 2012/11/19, 10:50:31 »
I've been using Siduction on my desktop for quite some time and it's absolutely brilliant so when I treated myself to one of these I decided to put Siduction on it also.

Unfortunately, when the dvd gets to runlevel 5 and starts lightdm, it ends up with a black screen with a cursor at the top left. I tried the safe graphics mode with exactly the same effect. In the interest of experimentation, I successfully installed Xubuntu on the beast!

When I boot the Siduction disk, I can press Ctrl + Alt + F1 to get a command prompt so I am wondering if there is anything I can do with graphics drivers or if there is a text mode installer for Siduction?

OK, that's odd.

I thought I'd try dropping to runlevel 3 and running an Xorg --configure but this time when I booted, everything works.

Ah well, I'll take that as a win :)

This isn't going as well as I'd hoped... I've installed the nvidia drivers and I'm again getting the black screen :(
I followed this manual page

I have two graphics cards:
Code: [Select]

root@orac:/etc/X11# lspci | grep -i vga
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK107 [GeForce GT 640M] (rev a1)

I have /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf which contains:
Code: [Select]

root@orac:/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d# cat 20-nvidia.conf
#

         Driver         "nvidia"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection
# This is a trailing line, it is needed so that End Section is not the last line

I used nvidia-xconfig to generate a config file.
Code: [Select]

# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig:  version 304.48  (pbuilder@cake)  Wed Sep 12 10:54:51 UTC 2012

Removing both the xorg.conf and xorg.conf.d allows me to boot back into a GUI. But with no 3D.

I'm sure I'm missing something obvious here so I'm off to try an Xorg --configure.... what could possibly go wrong :D

did you read our manual on how to install 3d-drivers?
no need for nvidia-xconfig.

The Setting looks like Optimus, so it's not possible to install nvidia at normal debian way. If it is real Optimus, e.g. the IGP can't be disabled in BIOS, only solution is bumblebee.

Yes, It didn't work without it so I figured I'd give it a go with exactly the same results.

I've not heard of Bumblebee so I guess I have some reading to do.

Cheers

Well that was easy.

Thank you for pointing me at Bumblebee.

Edited for completeness: Bumblebee in the Debian wiki
