Virtual Box and Kernel 4.0
« on: 2015/04/14, 15:44:58 »
As a heads up and FYI, Virtualbox DKMS host and guest modules will not build on 4.0.  As well there seems to be some stability issues with it.

Here's the issue in question; https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/13835.  Apparently the Virtualbox test repo contains the necessary fixes, I don't use them so I cannot confirm.

Not true!
Code: [Select]

~
towo:Defiant> apt-cache policy nvidia-driver
nvidia-driver:
  Installiert:           349.12-1.siduction.1
  Installationskandidat: 349.12-1.siduction.1
  Versionstabelle:
 *** 349.12-1.siduction.1 0
        500 file:/media/daten/debs/amd64/  Packages
        300 http://packages.siduction.org/extra/ experimental/non-free amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     346.47-0.siduction.3 0
        500 http://packages.siduction.org/user/ experimental/non-free amd64 Packages
     343.36-1 0
        100 http://http.debian.net/debian/ experimental/non-free amd64 Packages

     340.65-2 0
        500 http://http.debian.net/debian/ testing/non-free amd64 Packages

Driver from our repos does work with kernel 4.0, use 349.12 or 340.76 from us!

Code: [Select]
~
towo:Defiant> inxi -SG
System:    Host: Defiant Kernel: 4.0.0-towo.1-siduction-amd64 x86_64 (64 bit) Desktop: Cinnamon 2.2.16
           Distro: siduction 13.2.0 December - xfce - (201312310323)
Graphics:  Card: NVIDIA GM107 [GeForce GTX 750 Ti]
Display Server: X.Org 1.17.1 driver: nvidia Resolution: 1920x1080@60.00hz
GLX Renderer: GeForce GTX 750 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 GLX Version: 4.5.0 NVIDIA 349.12

And btw, virtualbox 4.3.26-dfsg-2 from experimental works fine with kernel 4.0.

I did a d-u now and the v-box modules were no build. Shall I do something manual for getting the fixed v-box from siduction extras repo, it is already enabled in my siduction.list?

hi again,
i also have a thing with the nvidia-driver, towo says to get  340.76 from siduction but i do not see it

Code: [Select]
root@dell:~# apt-cache policy nvidia-driver
nvidia-driver:
  Installed: 346.47-0.siduction.3
  Candidate: 346.47-0.siduction.3
  Package pin: 346.47-0.siduction.3
  Version table:
     349.16-1.siduction.1 1001
          1 http://ftp.spline.de/pub/siduction/extra/ experimental/non-free amd64 Packages
     346.59-1.siduction.1 1001
        500 http://ftp.spline.de/pub/siduction/fixes/ unstable/non-free amd64 Packages
 *** 346.47-0.siduction.3 1001
        500 http://ftp.spline.de/pub/siduction/user/ experimental/non-free amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     340.76-1 1001

     340.65-2 1001
        500 ftp://debian.netcologne.de/debian/ testing/non-free amd64 Packages

can someone please post the correct sources list of siduction, coming from debian testing , so many sources can be confusing, i picked the source from here .. so this is mine

Code: [Select]
deb http://ftp.spline.de/pub/siduction/base unstable main contrib non-free
#deb-src http://ftp.spline.de/pub/siduction/base unstable main

deb http://ftp.spline.de/pub/siduction/extra unstable main contrib non-free

I have no problems with nvidia drivers from experimental (yet) so people want stable use the way towo says

First, do a dist-upgrade, then

Code: [Select]
apt-get install linux-image-4.0.0-towo.1-siduction-amd64 linux-headers-4.0.0-towo.1-siduction-amd64
Reboot, then

Code: [Select]
apt-get install -t experimental nvidia-driver nvidia-settings libgl1-nvidia-glx-i386
If NOT running multi-arch, you don't need libgl1-nvidia-glx-i386

The results will give you

Code: [Select]
piper@x1:~$ inxi -F

apt-get install -t experimental virtualbox virtualbox-dkms virtualbox-source virtualbox-qt virtualbox-guest-additions-iso

Free speech isn't just fucking saying what you want to say, it's also hearing what you don't want to fucking hear

I either give too many fucks or no fucks at all, it's like I cannot find a middle ground for a moderate fuck distribution, it's like what the fuck

Virtualbox for Linux 4.0 fixed in our extras repository.

Virtualbox is in the contrib section, so if you have just the "main" section enabled in your sources.list you won't be able to install our vitrualbox, you need this:
Code: [Select]
deb http://packages.siduction.org/extra unstable main contribor this
Code: [Select]
deb http://packages.siduction.org/extra unstable main contrib non-free

Thank you Santa, that did it, Virtualbox is working again.

I thought the latest 3.x kernels have been rc-candidates for 4.0 and that there wouldn’t be any major steps from the late kernel 3.x to 4.0?

Virtualbox from debian experimental works and towto's nvidia drivers from experimental works like a charm.
