[EN] Question - More Seasoned Siduction User - KDE 6 Incoming?
« on: 2024/09/15, 16:56:15 »
I have been pushing off my full upgrade for a few weeks now and it seems things are calming as today I have 2 packages that want to be removed. kwayland-data and libkf5guiaddons-bin. I have many dependencies waiting to be installed. One of which is the version 6 of libkf6guiaddons-bin. I do not use wayland currently. So I am wondering if we are seeing KDE 6 incoming and is it safe for me to remove this one kde 5 library as kde is my main DE. Thank you all very much. Always appreciate the community here and the help and guidance provided. Here is my dependency list which probably doesn't matter.

I'm not a kde user but looking at your list both those packages are being replaced

kwayland5-data

Thanks. That is what I'm seeing but I don't trust myself lol. That's why I would like a more seasoned user to chime in so I can have a bit more confidence. I appreciate your reply though as it does help.

You're good to upgrade, as far as I can see. I have 4 KDE/Plasma systems, now all using wayland. Here is output from one:

Code: [Select]
# apt policy libkf6guiaddons-bin kwayland-data kwin-wayland
libkf6guiaddons-bin:
  Installed: 6.5.0-2
  Candidate: 6.5.0-2
  Version table:
 *** 6.5.0-2 500
        500 https://deb.debian.org/debian unstable/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
kwayland-data:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 4:5.115.0-2
  Version table:
     4:5.115.0-2 500
        500 https://deb.debian.org/debian unstable/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
kwin-wayland:
  Installed: 4:5.27.11-2
  Candidate: 4:5.27.11-2
  Version table:
 *** 4:5.27.11-2 500
        500 https://deb.debian.org/debian unstable/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

"A few weeks" is not generally advisable to wait to upgrade your sid system. If I don't see a warning on this forum, mine get upgraded almost daily.

Indeed. I should be clear I’m doing upgrades. Just not full upgrade.

You should only be doing full upgrades and often. I'm like dibl. Almost daily. Things can get out of hand quickly if you don't.

I do. Usually once a week. I have not only because I don’t want to break something. I’m not sure that this removal will break something because it looks like a pretty important kde library and kde is what I use. I’m glad you guys appear to have not had issues when doing a full upgrade but I have so I’m cautious. I’ve been using siduction for almost 6 years but I don’t claim to be an expert so thus the question. I plan on doing a full upgrade within the next couple of days to get back in sync whether I feel confident or not. I’m just asking the question and hopefully will get a more specific answer. Thanks.

LOL -- I've been using it for 15 years and I don't make any wild claims either!

Seriously, use

Code: [Select]
apt full-upgrade (or the nala equivalent) once a week, at least, unless you see that there's a warning on this forum about a new package coming into Debian, or an incomplete transition of a series, like python or libqt6 or something, that is breaking things. In that case, you can use

Code: [Select]
apt-upgrade for just as long as necessary until the problem is resolved -- usually only a day or a few days. As soon as the light turns green, go back to full-upgrade.

Thank you. I’ll pull the trigger. Last time I waited for the 64 bit transition and it paid off but this seems way way less impactful. Thanks to all who responded.

Oh wow. I’ve been on my mobile all day. I totally missed the top part of this post. All I saw was….. "A few weeks" is not generally advisable to wait to upgrade your sid system. If I don't see a warning on this forum, mine get upgraded almost daily.

My response was totally off based off the info you provided. My apologies sir and thank you.

It was mentioned a couple times. Best thing is to full-upgrade/dist-upgrade at least a few times a week. You may see package replacements rather than a version upgrade like we see in your first post. Other times it can be complete transitions. These can be problematic until complete. Sometime you just have to ride it out. Usually problems are posted so if you do have an issue check there before proceeding. Always best to pay attention to what's going to happen before committing.
