multifunction printer
« on: 2015/05/18, 15:21:31 »
My laser printer is getting old, my scanner is malfunctioning so I shall by a new small and not so expensive multifunction printer. I need scanner and printing functions, It shall be a laser printer, black and white prints are enough, there shall be network function on the printer.

During the years with linux I have had problems with scanners, I don't want to use windows to be able to scan anymore.

Shall I just choose a hp-printer, are all of them working with siduction?

One example
HP LaserJet Pro MFP M127fn

Hi,

I have an hp laserjet 100 color MFP M175nw working here on siduction since about 2 years. Works perfect on my wireless network. Scanner also no problem. Needs an "hp-setup" from time to time.

Had a problem after buying with my "Belichtungstrommel" -sorry dont know the english expression, google says: "Imaging Drum"-. Contacted hp support per email. Fast and competend responce. Received a spare part in short time to change it by myself, as was my wish, insteed of sending the whole printer back and getting it changed by hp, as they suggested first. On warranty of course.

Would buy an hp again if necessary.

greets
ayla

At work and home we use brother printers, no problems with scanning & printing :)

Are booth Brother and HP printing and scanning working with native debian drivers/applications or do they need any non free drivers/applications ?

apt-cache policy hplip
hplip:
  Installiert:           3.14.6-1+b2
  Installationskandidat: 3.14.6-1+b2
  Versionstabelle:
 *** 3.14.6-1+b2 0
        500 http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ unstable/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
is needed for my printer, as it is in debian main, it should be free software, but I'm not sure any more whether hp-setup is downloading firmware or drivers from hp.  It's a longer time ago I first installed it.

For brother printers one needs the drivers from:

I'm not sure about the HP multifunction units, but my P1606dn needs a plugin that is installed via hp-setup.  But it has been running error-free for several years -- I like the HP reliability.

Buy the HP and combine it with the hplip package. Works out of box!
