If you would put any information at all into your post, maybe we can. Right now it says exactly nothing and just wastes my time.

ad example GSmartControl:

dacorsa@NanoSID:~$ gsmartcontrol
Command 'gsmartcontrol' is available in '/usr/local/sbin/gsmartcontrol'
The command could not be located because '/usr/local/sbin' is not included in the PATH environment variable.
This is most likely caused by the lack of administrative priviledges associated with your user account.
gsmartcontrol: command not found

Could not find the database of available applications, run update-command-not-found as root to fix this

gsmartcontrol: command not found

gsmartcontroll is here running when opened from a root-terminal.

So it seems you have installed it not using apt.

As you can see, if using apt to install it it is located in the /usr/sbin directory not in /usr/locale/sbin

So, my way to solve this would be: remove the installation of gsmartcontrol and install it with apt.

You ask about a mysterious app. How are we going to know what to do if we do not know what the app is that does not start. What is the name, how was it installed and what does it output if you start it as root in konsole?

Same System. Running synaptic with doubleclick from desktop works fine. Requester appears and waits fpr password. Giving synaptic the user password let synaptic start. no problems, sorry, cant retrace, so I'm out
