Its noch only a hovereffect, the thumbs become bigger and turn slightly.
I would like to use something similar for prensnting fotos on a joomla-page

Thanks for the link. It seems the template is older, so the acording text should be in the archive, but I cannot find it.

A vie to the source showed me, that they are using jquery, but I don not see what kind of plugin.

According to my not even basic JS knowledge the function you are looking for should be found here:
