Title: New Kernel seems broken for me
Post by: GoinEasy9 on 2021/11/07, 15:37:13
Hello folks

Today after the DU, my install brings me through grub and then gives mdadm:no arrays found in config file or automatically, then drops me to a initramfs shell.

Booting to the previous kernel allows for a normal boot.

new kernel 5.15.1-1
working kernel 5.14.15-2

I'm attaching a screen pic of the error screen.

Edit: No errors occurred after updating my lxqt install, new kernel boots fine.

TIA
Tom

Looks all good, i don't see any reason, why that kernel should not boot.

I think I'll try removing, then, reinstalling it and see what happens.

I'll post again afterwards.

Hello again

Removing the kernel, then, reinstalling it led to the same error as before. So, I'll wait till a new kernel is ready, and, see if the same thing happens, Very strange, but it is the first of the 5.15 kernels.

Thanks for your help towo

Here's a thread that describes the issue and some possible fixes (if a new kernel doesn't resolve it):

Thanks dibl

I played with the advice from the forum post. I couldn't fix or even have a different result come up. So, hopefully the next kernel will fix the problem, since it seems I'm the only one experiencing it.

Thanks again, obviously your Google Fu is a lot letter than mine.

Hello again.

It seems that 5.15.1-3 is giving me the same "can't find root" error. I'm waiting to see what happens when Tumbleweed releases a 5.15 kernel. Maybe I can do some comparisons. at least my 5.14 kernel still works.

Your error message where the UUID is not recognized makes me suspect something is not quite right on your system. Have you recently added any drives, or changed partition layout, or anything like that? If you are using the UUIDs in /etc/fstab, which I highly recommend, then you might want to compare the UUIDs in fstab with the UUID in the grub config file and make sure that it matches the boot partition. Do you have a swap partition -- your grub couldn't seem to recognize the UUID for resume, which would be the swap partition.

Hi dibl

Thanks for the ideas.

The machine has been running siduction for many years, hasn't changed a bit. It has a rack mount for the HDD. I have 4 disks that I can easily slip in, one with windows 10, one with siduction, one with Leap and one with Tumbleweed. anyway ...

The UUID in fstab, for root, is the same as the one showing in the error. Works with 5.14, errors out with 5.15. I have all the normal partitions /root, /home & swap.

I'm going to see if I can find something in the logs, Eventually the answer will turn up.

Hi GoinEasy9,
just to stand by you, my little server has the same problem with kernel 5.15, you're not alone :-)

It's an old installation, maybe 8 years, but dist-upgraded up to date and running fine with Kernel 5.14.16-2. Siduction is installed on the SanDisk SSD /dev/sda. There is no firmware update available. The three HDD are newer.

Code: [Select]
root@turing:~# inxi -D
Drives:    Local Storage: total: 5.52 TiB used: 1 TiB (18.2%)
           ID-1: /dev/sda vendor: SanDisk model: SDSSDP064G size: 59.63 GiB
           ID-2: /dev/sdb vendor: Seagate model: ST2000VN004-2E4164 size: 1.82 TiB
           ID-3: /dev/sdc vendor: Western Digital model: WD20EFRX-68EUZN0 size: 1.82 TiB
           ID-4: /dev/sdd vendor: Western Digital model: WD20EFRX-68EUZN0 size: 1.82 TiB

I hope it is an error in the Kernel and will be fixed in a new version. But I have the vague suspicion that something was dropped and will never come back  :'(

Have you more than one distro installed on your PC?
Title: Re: New Kernel seems broken for me
Post by: vindeliker on 2021/11/13, 14:21:18
no, siduction is the one and only.
The SSD is for system, the HDDs are first for multimedia of another linux TV box (nfs share), second for web content (four apache virtual hosts) and nfs shares and third for backup of the second one.

Greetings from an old Siduction user, since a few years
a Gentoo compiling nerd.
My guess is that the new linux-5.15.x has lost compatibility with old hardware. I tried extensibly to boot with the new kernel. My method to put the old .config into the new directory /usr/src/linux-5.15 and create a new one with:
make oldconfig
didn't work. I tried four times to figure out a new .config. Until I had the idea to grab the Towo Siduction kernel:
---
ral@maci:/boot$ vdir vmlinuz-5.15*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 7555296 Nov 12 16:01 vmlinuz-5.15.2-1-siduction-amd64
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 7133824 Nov 13 13:57 vmlinuz-5.15.2-1.11.144
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 7267776 Nov 13 20:46 vmlinuz-5.15.2-2.129.453
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 7249344 Nov 14 16:59 vmlinuz-5.15.2-3.145.491
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 7317856 Nov 15 14:41 vmlinuz-5.15.2-4.860.2435
---
It isn't a wrongly configured kernel source. Towos kernel boots with all the same error, something with:
ata1 error
I could make a photo from the boot screen before the computer reboots - if you are interested. I do have a Debian-Testing installation for the rescue (having Gentoo this might be necessary sometimes). There the Towo Siduction kernel also plays the same error. Something with the new kernel-5.15 and NVIDIA-MCP7x ???

So on all my systems, i can't confirm that issue.

Maybe you all with that problem can boot with "quiet" removed from kernel command, maybe we see, what's going wrong.

I just came up with a solution for my vmlinuz-5.15.2  by adding:
irqpoll
rootdelay=7
like this boot options:
Code: [Select]
# cat /proc/cmdline
initrd=\icoreduo.img irqpoll tsx=on noacpi random.trust_cpu=1 ipv6.disable=1 root=/dev/sda3 systemd.unit=default.target hibernate=no rootdelay=7 init=/sbin/systemd rootfstype=ext4 systemd.show_status=1 systemd.log_level=7 acpi_backlight=vendor modeset.nouveau=1 vt.handoff=1
(running without a regular initrd but with only a core2 firmware update image)

This I found out, because I wanted to make a photo of the ata1 error. Since Linux-4.4 sometimes I get an irq 20 error with the hint to use irqpoll as option. For this error never had consequences I never used irqpoll. But to not disturb the error analyzis in this forum I introduced the "irqpoll" option now. This helped. It seems to me that the linux-5.15 kernel is somewhat more sensible and just needs an extra care in options.

The Towo siduction kernel could start my debian-testing partition and my self compiled kernel boots the Gentoo partition just perfectly by adding these two options.

hopefully I catched the first error. After that he reduces the speed to 1.5Gbps followed by the same error and finally got the errors from the first posting.

ralul's solution didn't work here

@vindeliker,
weird it is, that my two additional options don't work for you, because my error seemed to be the same as yours! If you are unsure the changed boot options take effect, then test them inserting into a previous boot entry and try to see them in: cat /proc/cmdline
... and I would wait some days, there are a record of 940 error corrections in the stableque on the way to 5.15.3

Hi

I tried rootdelay=10 without success when error first appeared. Here's the pic with quiet removed.

Can you purge the package mdadm? Maybe it lowering the noise in your messages.

The failing systems are
- older systems
- have nvidia mcp7xxx chips
- not having the same distro (me having Gentoo stable)
- not having the same hard disks

I guess some kernel fixes are coming, like perhaps:
rtc-mcp795-add-spi-id-table.patch
Code: [Select]

+++ b/drivers/rtc/rtc-mcp795.c

+       { .name = "mcp795" },

                .probe = mcp795_probe,
+               .id_table = mcp795_spi_ids,
 };

 module_spi_driver(mcp795_driver);

in the stableque for 5.15.3
But with this real time clock patch, I am not expert enough to know if it has to do with the NVIDIA MCP7xxx chips. But the timeout errors point direction timings ....

Hi

I purged mdadm removed quiet and this is what came up.

Hello

OK, just did an update, got a new kernel, 5.15.2-2, boot worked without error. I guess we received some towo magic.

I'm curious, do we know what caused it?

I'm leaving mdadm purged, I have no raid devices that need monitoring.

Thanks

If the new kernel is working, the problem was upstream, since the new kernel has only patch-5.15.3-rc2 added.

Off topic but I posting it here due to tthe latest posting:

@ towo purely out of couriosity:

I assumed the siduction kernels are based on the latest stable kernel, which currently is 5.15.

Now seeing in the above posting that the newest kernel has the 5.15-rc2 patch it looks like the current siduction kernel is 5.14 plus selected 5.15 patches? So at which point do you switch to the next kernel number? Or what does it mean?

So is the general idea to use the pre-stabel kernel as the basis for siduction kernels and then add step by step the RC patches of the latest released kernel and see how it works out for siduction users? And then the numbering does not refere to the released kernel but only to the use of some RC-patches of said kernel?

This is for my (and maybe other's) couriosity only ...

All working well here and thanks again.

You should open your eyes.
I sayed the kernel has patch 5.15.3-rc2 in, not 5.15-rc2.

Auf Kernel.org jetzt gerade eingestellt:
stable:    5.15.3    2021-11-18
Bestimmt identisch mit Towos _rc2 Linux kernel.

Hi

Strangest thing, on this same computer ... during this mornings full-upgrade I got a kernel panic. I had to do a cold boot to recover, and, during dpkg --reconfigure -a, I got another kernel panic. I'm not sure, but I think it was trying to rebuild intramfs when it happened. dpkg --reconfigure -a after the second panic came up with nothing. Upon reboot, the new 5.15.4 kernel booted just fine and there doesn't seem to be any residual problems from the kernel panic.

DU's on the new machine and the old lxqt laptop went without incident.

BTW - Thunderbird just  released it's 5.15 kernel, and, it blew up on this machine also. Instead of just dropping me to busybox, it just left me with some colored artifacts.
