[EN] What's your hostname?
« on: 2014/05/11, 03:22:41 »
I always struggle to come up with a good hostname when I get a new computer. Now that I've got siduction installed, I'm looking for a good hostname. What did you call your system?

Hi,

my systems are named to places from Marion Zimmer-Bradleys "Darkover" series. :)

I was always inspired by the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Therefore my current system is called "heartofgold" and there are a lot of more funny and unique names in these novels ;)

@ayla: Thumbs up :)!

I don't have a straight line when it comes to naming. The name somehow must match the character of the machine. I have a "gemini" that once was a Windows machine, there is a "phoenix" which earned its name when being revived after an "emergency operation", a "panther" which is just dark and quiet, an "oldie" (guess why), a "speedy" (laptop with 256 MB RAM after installation of antiX instead of Windows) and so on.

I'm boring - I just use the model number of the confuser. p690, dv9000, etc.

Because I have a mix of 32 and 64 bit installs (only one 32 bit left), and the fact that I have 4 distros on my UEFI machine, I use:

(distro_name)(32/64)(Display Environment)(CPU-abbreviation)

# hostname
siduction64kdefx

It may be a bit long, but it makes it easier when I'm looking at my routers DHCP client list.

I have no system, so the hostnames are only meaningful to me:

imerabox      (custom built desktop, started as aptosid Imera)
e6500          (Dell Latitude E6500 laptop)
suzdesk       (previous custom built system, now wife's desktop)
tosh205        (Toshiba NB-205 netbook)
decembersid  (old E-Machines POS with "December" installed)
System76 Oryx Pro, Intel Core i7-11800H, SSD 970 EVO Plus;  Asus ROG STRIX X299-E, Core i7-7740X, Nvidia GTX-1060, dual monitors, SSD 860 EVO

my headless slaves are named by what they're used for:
