the graphics card is onboard graphics effects but runs fine with windows cube on fire, smashing, and other effects in another distro.

Tnis must then be related to the little bug where the RC had virtual desktops set to 1 thus rendering some of the effects inoperative. If you had installed the rc you can set the virtual desktops to 4 to activate the pager and then you'd get the cube and all that
