[EN] Wifi wlagn Or iwlwifi ?
« on: 2012/02/12, 20:19:49 »
I have had this Laptop for two years and always used the wlagn modules to activate the Intel Pro 5100 AGN wifi..
THis holds true for CrunchBang, Squeeze, Wheezy and now Sid...

Just working in Wheezy after doing about 100 updates and noticed that I am now loading iwlwifi which I did not do manually. I did have iwlagn..what happened?

The Debian WiFi page says
Quote

iwlwifi
iwl3945  Intel PRO/Wireless 3945
iwl4965  Intel PRO/Wireless 4965

iwlagn

Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN
Intel Wireless WiFi Link 5100AGN
Intel Wireless WiFi Link 5300AGN
Intel Wireless WiFi Link 5350AGN
Intel Wireless WiFi Link 5150AGN
Intel Wireless WiFi Link 1000BGN
Intel Wireless WiFi Link 6200AGN
Intel Wireless WiFi Link 6300AGN
Intel Wireless WiFi Link 6250AGN

08:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 03)

However if I
Code: [Select]

lsmod | grep iwl

I only see iwlwifi in Wheezy but iwlagn in all other Debian installs.
I originally installed iwlagn in wheezy when first installed.
What happened..?
...Should the iwlagn be reinstalled?

In recent kernels iwlagn does not exist anymoe.

Thanks for the update....
I'm posting this from my Wheezy install which I just researched before seeing your post..

Today as you point out my Wheezy updates took me from kernel 3.1.xx to 3.2.0-1..
End of mystery!
for those wishing to read further on @towo's info..

Here it is..

Code: [Select]
root@debian7:/home/sqlpython# uname -r
3.2.0-1-686-pae

so now when I
Code: [Select]
lsmod | grep iwl
I see
Code: [Select]
root@debian7:/home/sqlpython# lsmod | grep iwl
iwlwifi               146774  0
mac80211              171359  1 iwlwifi
cfg80211              117454  2 iwlwifi,mac80211

The iwlwifi module (iwlagn prior to Linux 3.2) is produced by the iwlwifi Linux kernel driver, which supports several Intel wireless LAN adapters:

Intel Wireless WiFi 4965AGN
In Wheezy, this device is now supported by the iwlegacy driver (iwl4965 module).
