[Solved] Repeated kernel panics

I have run "apt-get update" successfully, this morning, but every time I try to run "apt-get upgrade", it has a kernel panic (attempted three times). I am running the -4 kernel, possibly I have upgraded it too far.

I have been unable to find the output of the kernel panic after rebooting. If someone can tell me where it can be found (if it still exists), I will be happy to post it.

You should not run upgrade anywaysm, but only dist-upgrade. But that is most likely not your problem.

3.4-0.towo.4-siduction-amd64 is perfectly fine here.
Can you make a photo of the kernel panic?

And you use 32 or 64bit?
Older kernels does not have this problem?

I apologize. It is 64 bit. Hardware is Gigabyte Z68A-D3-B3, Intel i5-2500 (I think it is 2500k), ATI HD6770 1 GB running open source driver, 8 GB DDR3 RAM, 1 TB SATA III drive.

You use LAN or Wireless?

I usually use LAN, but I have been having trouble with the download speed dropping to very low speeds (less than 1 kb/sec). The kernel panics have been occurring when I disconnect the wired connection and try the wireless connection in hope of maintaining faster downloads,

I have also compiled and installed r8168 ethernet card driver trying to get better wired speeds. The speeds start off well, but then slow to about 2 kb/sec, then even much slower. This does not occur with Ubuntu, Sabayon, or Arch. I think the problem is with the repositories, but I am not sure.

Before or after the panics?

Before the panics. However, the panics must be being caused by my wireless driver and firmware, which I also had to install manually, because the panics were occurring when I had the ethernet connection disconnected. The wireless driver is rt3562sta from Ralink and the firmware is rt2860.bin.

I have just completed a dist-upgrade via the wired connection. It took a very long time, but it finally succeeded. At times, the speed went to zero for several minutes at a time.

So, it seems I should not try to use my wireless card with this system. It is a Ralink RT3062. I have to install the firmware and compile the driver for every distro, but this is the first time it has caused kernel panics.

Ok, I managed to get it working with a wireless connection and no kernel panic. The Debian Wiki says I can use the standard kernel driver rt2800pci as long as I have the rt2860.bin firmware installed. It does work, but the connection is much slower than what I get with the rt3562sta driver from Ralink. rt3562sta maintains a steady 130 mbps connection, but rt2800pci gives a variable connection between about 50-80 mbps.

However, that is good enough as long as it doesn't cause kernel panics.
