[EN] [SOLVED]Newbie Using Apt
« on: 2013/10/01, 12:51:21 »
Been using linux for a while - trying out siduction xfce on a 30GB section of My HD.

Now the first thing I've all ways done is to update/upgrade using synaptic - no synaptic

So went to terminal and did  - apt-get update && apt get upgrade

Now looking at forum it looks like this is a big no no - will it have broken My system ?

Next if I install synaptic can it safely be used to install programs , for instance leafpad ?

Hello and wellcome !

we suggest to do  updates/upgrades not while running an graphical gui as synaptic.
The reason for this is that during an upgrade parts of the underlying graphic system (xorg) maybe upgraded/replaced. So your graphic gui might fail and leave you with an half upgrated or unuseable system.
This happens quite extremly rare but you have to keep it in mind  if you use a tool like synaptic.

Instead it is suggested:
    Start in console-mode (init 3)
    Login as root.
    Execute
apt-get update.
Execute apt-get dist-upgrade.
[/list]

If you like it, use synaptic for research. Don't use it for installs or dist-upgrades. It's not installed because we don't recommend it's use (for installs).

We completely agree with using apt and it's brothers and sisters, but "apt-get upgrade" is a "no, no", right. I am sure, whereever you read this "no, no" there was mentioned the "Yes,Yes" option, like here.
Instead of "apt-get upgrade[/color]" **always** use "apt-get dist-upgrade[/color]" in RL 3 (aka init 3).

Is it still working ("apt-get upgrade" is not guaranteed to break your system each time you use it, but it will happen rather sooner than later)?

Simply don't do it.

Have fun ;-)

Ok, you can't code, but you still might be able to write a bug report for Debian's sake

Did you reboot? A live system?

I *assume* that dist-upgrade pulled to many new packages and you ran out of RAM.

I don't understand your setup. Live or 30 GB hd?

If you only want to try out use a usb-stick and install to it like you do to hd. Then you have the complete usb-sitck for dist-upgrades. With live system you only have the Ram space.

But if you have the system on hd and now a blank screen, how blank is it? Black konsole with "Login:" in the upper left corner?

Hi michaa7 My hard drive is partitioned to give Me a 30 GB section where I can install other operating systems to 'play' with without mucking up My main OS.
I made the mistake of using 'apt-get upgrade' , I have now done a fresh install, however I did 'apt-get update' then 'apt get dist-upgrade and got this -

Yes, rerun "apt-get update" until it runs to successful completion.

Hi theblackpig and welcome to siduction

Try changing your sources to
Code: [Select]
   deb ftp://ftp.uni-stuttgart.de/siduction/base unstable main
    deb-src ftp://ftp.uni-stuttgart.de/siduction/base unstable main
    deb ftp://ftp.uni-stuttgart.de/siduction/extra unstable main
    deb-src ftp://ftp.uni-stuttgart.de/siduction/extra unstable main
    deb ftp://ftp.uni-stuttgart.de/siduction/fixes unstable main
    deb-src ftp://ftp.uni-stuttgart.de/siduction/fixes unstable main

If you can't get to the desktop use nano to change sources
Code: [Select]
nano /etc/apt/sources.list.d/siduction.list
Then do
Code: [Select]
init 3 && apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgradeIf any errors, (not the error above that you posted, because that mirror is down at the moment, at least it is here) try running
Code: [Select]
apt-get -f install
