It is missing the firmware iwlwifi.
Either install with apt

Code: [Select]
apt update && apt install firmware-iwlwifi

or, you install the package isenkram-cli, which should tell you what firmware is missing on the system.
As root then run: isenkram-autoinstall-firmware (description below)

In both cases non-free must be active.

We also have a little tool on board, called "fw-detect".

Thanks for the replies!

I new about fw-detect, which told me to install firmware-iwlwifi, but it was already installed.  As you can see in the output of modprobe, iwlwifi is loaded already.  (Also, I did reboot after installation.)

I did google around and the problems I've seen seem to be kernel related, as Alder Lake is pretty new.  (For instance, this post, or this entry on linux-hardware.org.)  But there are very few hits, as far as I could see.)

Maybe you need a more current firmware.

Maybe you need a more current firmware.

https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/users/drivers/iwlwifi

That was a really good idea.  Unfortunately, it did not work...  I installed the latest, and it loaded OK.

Code: [Select]
i# lsmod | grep wifi
iwlwifi               290816  1 iwlmvm
cfg80211              405504  3 iwlmvm,iwlwifi,mac80211

But I still don't see it:

Code: [Select]
i# ip link
1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 65536 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN mode DEFAULT group default qlen 1000
    link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
2: eno2: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state UP mode DEFAULT group default qlen 1000
    link/ether 50:eb:f6:c1:ac:1d brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
    altname enp0s31f6

Code: [Select]
# iw dev
phy#0
        Unnamed/non-netdev interface
                wdev 0x2
                addr a0:e7:0b:c6:3d:0b
                type P2P-device
                txpower 0.00 dBm

The errors in dmesg are fewer and different:

Code: [Select]
# dmesg | grep wifi

Solved: linux-image-5.18.0-rc6-siduction-amd64 worked (still with the newer firmware, but I am not sure it is necessary).

Thanks for the help!

Shoot...

I am not sure what happened, but it stopped working.  It worked without any problems for a good while, and after a few reboots.  I was working on configuring plasma, mostly, and after a reboot it stopped working.  I did not touch networking settings at all.

I am still in the same kernel and did not touch the firmware (iwlwifi loads fine).

Here is the output of dmesg: https://paste.debian.net/1240727/

With grep wifi:

Code: [Select]
$ cat dmesg.txt | grep wifi

I suspect that two modules are interfering with each other here.
Quote from: finotti
Code: [Select]
i# lsmod | grep wifi
iwlwifi               290816  1 iwlmvm
cfg80211              405504  3 iwlmvm,iwlwifi,mac80211
Also, I'm not sure if rfkill is supported by asus.
So in the past they checked loading with asus:

Code: [Select]
lsmod | grep -i asus
Trial and error

OK, after a lot of fiddling, it seems that a simple service iwd restart seems to fix it...  I don't know what is the problem to start the service, but I can live with it:
