Scroll bar behavior in KDE?
« on: 2015/07/31, 21:04:03 »
After a fresh installation and upgrade (not dist-upgrade) of Indian Summer KDE, the scroll bar behavior in several applications (like Iceweasel) is different from what I'm used to seeing.  Scroll bars now have no arrow buttons to scroll one line at a time, and clicking on the scroll bar jumps directly to the corresponding part of the document.  Previously there were arrow buttons on the scroll bars and clicking on the scroll bar jumped one page at a time, and KDE programs (like Konsole and System Settings) still behave this way.

How do I control the scroll bar behavior for applications and return to the behavior that I'm familiar with?

Did you use apt upgrade or apt-get upgrade? The latter is not advisable to use in sid/siduction. For the differences between apt-get upgrade and apt-get dist-upgrade please rewfer to man apt-get.

That being said, dist-upgrade is the preferred and recommended way of upgrading in sid/siduction. Please do that and also install kde-standard and report back if the issue persists.

Interestingly enough, prior to Indian Summer I had no scroll arrows in Chromium but arrows in Iceweasel. I just thought it was a Chromium or QT/GTK thing. I generally use the touchpad or mouse wheel anyway, so it is no real issue.

Since I have done the clean install of Indian Summer and Plasma 5, I have the opposite situation. I have arrows in Chromium, but none in Iceweasel. If I grab the bar with the mouse the bar changes to a blue color and I can drag it up and down. If I open a KDE app (Kate and Gwenview specifically) I see the same bar but also arrows shaped like the theme caret style ( ^ ). In Chrome I see a full triangle.

I use apt-upgrade (seldom) more often a dist-upgrade and never an upgrade. KDE-Standard was installed.

Unfortunately, I'm getting a lot of dist-upgrade errors today (time out, unmet dependencies, etc) from multiple servers and the GCC transition is coming up soon.   I might run pure Indian Summer for a few days.

One can ignore this warning without problems, this will resullt in a lot of fun and maybe deeper knowledge of snapshots and aptitude 8)

I've found the best tools to be patience and reading things more than once. On the flip side, I've learned the most when I've ignored that advice. :)
