Title: [SOLVED] Kernel 5.2.4-towo.1 booting problem
Post by: dibl on 2019/07/28, 18:12:08
Booting kernel 5.2.4-towo.1 results in a sddm failure and fallback to tty1. In /var/log/Xorg.0.log I find this error:

Code: [Select]
[282308.248] (EE) Failed to open authorization file "/var/run/sddm/{6cbd4072-4f80-490f-b4fb-75f5cd24e06a}": No
such file or directory

Google shows that others have experienced this error in the past (Manjaro and Suse), but I don't find a clear explanation of the cause or the fix.

Booting 5.1.19-towo.1 has no problem booting into X.

This system uses the nvidia proprietary driver.

Heretically I would say install lighdm.     ;)

The error does not occur on Intel graphics.  So, I think we know where to point the finger (and which finger to use ....).  LOL

@piper, I wonder if that newer Nvidia driver that you're running will fix it.  Trying now.

YES!

So, the solution is, kernel 5.2.4-towo.1 with nvidia hardware requires nvidia-driver ver. 430.xxx from the experimental repo.  I just pulled in 430.34-1.

@terroreek, I may get corrected as soon as I post, but AFAIK you can pin a package to a version, but not to a repo.

would something like this work?
Code: [Select]
Package: nvidia*

Pin: release o=Debian,a=experimental

Do you think something like that would work?  I have a feeling it will break with things like libnvidia-eglcore ... I'll try tinkering in a vm and see what happens.

Reviewing the wiki (https://wiki.debian.org/AptPreferences), it looks like it might work, however IIRC there are a couple of dependent packages that are not named "nvidia*", e.g. xserver-xorg-video-nvidia and libnvidia-glcore.

Hallo,

deb http://10.10.10.3:3142/mirror.math.princeton.edu/pub/debian unstable main contrib non-free

Are you forgetting extra  experimental?

This is not needed at the moment anyways, regular experimental will work, but, when debian falls behind towo usually gets ahead and this is where it will be  ;)

@axt

No protests, it's obvious you don't have kids or grandkids

Can you actually play some of these older games with nouveau like Witcher, Witcher 2, Witcher 3, Prey, No Mans Sky, Skyrim

The big picture is it's not about protests, it's about what is usable.

My kids are grown up, they play games, they have kids that play games, I have two grandkids that have their own cars and drive here to visit and help me around the house, they play games, they both know windows, mac, linux, android, very well.

So, I use what is usable to my family, nouveau is not even in the same league as nvidia when it comes to gaming.

Linux is not all about the professional's, the business, the server, it's also about fun & family.

EDIT: I forgot my

:) :) :P :P

If this don't work

Code: [Select]
deb http://packages.siduction.org/extra experimental main contrib non-free
try this instead

Code: [Select]
deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ experimental  main contrib non-free
Code: [Select]
apt update; apt install nvidia-driver nvidia-driver-libs nvidia-settings nvidia-kernel-dkms

This is the problem, debian itself works this way

okay, lets try this

you have

Code: [Select]
# # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # #
# See sources.list(5) for more information, especialy remember that you can   #
# only use http, ftp or file URIs, CDROMs are managed through apt-cdrom.      #
#                                                                             #
# # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # #
# Please use /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ instead of this file and create a       #
# separate *.list configuration file for each repository, containing the      #
# actual deb/deb-src desired suites and components for that repository.       #
#                                                                             #
# # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # #
#   /etc/apt/sources.list.d/debian.list                                       #
#   /etc/apt/sources.list.d/extra.list                                        #
#   /etc/apt/sources.list.d/fixes.list                                        #
# # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # #
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ sid contrib main non-free
#deb http://packages.siduction.org/extra experimental main contrib non-free
jf2@jf2-pc:~$

lets make it look like this

Code: [Select]
# # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # #
# See sources.list(5) for more information, especialy remember that you can   #
# only use http, ftp or file URIs, CDROMs are managed through apt-cdrom.      #
#                                                                             #
# # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # #
# Please use /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ instead of this file and create a       #
# separate *.list configuration file for each repository, containing the      #
# actual deb/deb-src desired suites and components for that repository.       #
#                                                                             #
# # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # #
#   /etc/apt/sources.list.d/debian.list                                       #
#   /etc/apt/sources.list.d/extra.list                                        #
#   /etc/apt/sources.list.d/fixes.list                                        #
# # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # #
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ sid contrib main non-free
deb http://packages.siduction.org/extra experimental main contrib non-free
jf2@jf2-pc:~$

Notice the difference

#deb http://packages.siduction.org/extra experimental main contrib non-free

deb http://packages.siduction.org/extra experimental main contrib non-free

You really shouldn't be using this section to add sources

I think we should start from scratch

Code: [Select]
apt purge nvidia.
(Make sure you *include* the period, this will delete all of nvidia blob)

Code: [Select]
apt update; apt install nvidia-driver nvidia-driver-libs nvidia-settings nvidia-kernel-dkms  -t experimental

Prima!

Vielen Dank

You can keep the experimental line in there, a dist-upgrade won't use it unless you used something like

Code: [Select]
apt update; apt full-upgrade -t experimental

But, it also doesn't hurt to disable it, maybe you should so accidents don't happen :)

Glad it worked

Yes, always need a reboot with a newer kernel or installing nvidia drivers
