Title: [Solved 17 DEC] Googleearth blues -- 64-bit, Nvidia GTX-480
Post by: dibl on 2012/08/27, 19:48:30
It's been many months since I ran Googleearth -- last time I needed it, it worked perfectly.  Today, it runs but presents only a black window with no Earth. I don't see a recent discussion on this forum or other debian forums.

I remember this problem from some time back -- it was fixable with nvidia-glx-ia32 ia32-libs-gtk lib32nss-mdns ia32-libs and lib32ncurses5.  So, I made sure I have all those installed, and they are.

Next, I uninstalled Googleearth and used googleearth-package to make a new .deb, and installed that one (6.0.3.xxx).  It runs fine, but there is no change in the video problem.

Who can advise me?  Here is the box:

nvidia-glx-ia32 is a dummy package, it contains nothing.
You need to install libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386.

However, I am a confused guy now:

Why confused?
GE is a 32bit app and need 32bit glx.
nvidia-glx-ia32 dos not help anymore, so you need to enable multiarch.

Upppppps -- I wasn't expecting this, after I installed libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386:

Is that normal?

No, is not normal. I would say, libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386 is not ready for multiarch. I would fill a bugreport.

OK, thanks towo.  Maybe I will file a bug report.  But this OS is over one year old and was converted from aptosid.  It may not be a great example of "stock" Debian sid, at this point.  I appreciate your advice -- thanks!

Yeah, I saw that.  Probably I should not have tried that -- it is the same link as the screenshot in the post 5 posts up.  I think the BTS mail handler changed the code somehow.

Update -- @towo you were correct, as usual.  The culprit is the libxvmc package:

No @dibl, that sounds like a postmodern view, one of basic categories is illusion, or german spoken: Die Täuschung ist das Silikon der Postmoderne

But I don't think, @vilde represent such a position. :-)

Re: Bug#686033: libgl1-nvidia-glx: 304.37-1 libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386, removes libgl1-nvidia-glx (amd64) and Nvidia driver

Ralf Jung post@ralfj.de

Hi,

with the 304 drivers in current unstable, this bug even means that 32bit
apps get no acceleration at all since the ia32 packages have already
been removed.

I can confirm that the patch by you, Andreas, is working fine. The
problems with the conffile are caused by a bug in dpkg [1] and there are
other packages triggering it, like libpam-modules. Would it be
appropriate for the NVidia packagers to do an NMU on libxvmc to fix this
situation? Note that I am not speaking about Wheezy here, but about the
current broken status of Sid.
If that'd be of any help, I could do an upload to mentors.d.o (don't
know if that's also used for NMUs, sorry if this is wrong).

Kind regards,
Ralf

Hi,

I just applied a crude HACK that makes libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386
co-installable with libgl1-nvidia-glx:amd64 to the packages in sid and
experimental.

My reply:

Quote
Thank you Andreas.

I can confirm that your hacked package installed correctly here on my 64-bit sid system, with no destruction to the nvidia driver:

"root@imerabox:/# apt-cache policy libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386
libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386:
  Installed: 304.48-2
  Candidate: 304.48-2

     304.37-0 0
        500 http://packages.siduction.org/user/ unstable/non-free i386 Packages"

Thank you very much!

However, even with this issue "fixed" (or hacked around), the 64-bit googleearth package, as created by googleearth-package, depends on ia32-libs-gtk, which will cause massive removals if it is installed.  I am going to grab a 32-bit machine and make a googleearth package, and see what happens if I try to install that one on a 64-bit system.

And 5 minutes of spinning the Earth and zooming indicates that Googleearth is working correctly.  So, if you want to do this to your system, then you can probably have googleearth today.

Now, I must decide whether I like Googleearth better than radiotray.  Hmmmmmm.

Did you take a look at
Code: [Select]
apt-cache depends google-earth-package
?

When I did that today I saw 3 xxx:i386 packages on the list, that I did not have installed.  But when I previously tried to install the googleearth deb package, there was no complaint about these 3 packages.  So I think it might install even with the missing dependencies, which might make it crash.  (Just guessing ....)

Many i386 packages were installed. Unfortunately without success.

Sorry: Google-Translate ;)

I think you have an extra hyphen  "-" in "googleearth"  ;-)

So, I did not have bzip2:i386, file:i386, or x11-utls:i386.  But googleearth-package would install without them, which is a bug.  So I removed googleearth-package, installed the 3 :i386 files, then reinstalled googleearth-package, then ran make-googleearth-package, then proceeded to install the deb as shown in my post above.

I'll give it  try. Worse comes to worse, I can just uninstall and wait for a fix :)

I have them also -- they don't seem to be hurting anything here.

dibl, what's your comment about google-earth vs Radio Tray? Not possible to install both? Radio Tray is working nicely here. I'll try your Google Earth fix this afternoon.

If you look at the removed packages, when I did the "apt-get -f install", radiotray was on the list of stuff that was ripped out.  You always have to look carefully at the removals when you use -f install.

I actually use radiotray more than Googleearth, so if this situation doesn't change in a few days or a week, Googleearth may go back where it came from.

Off topic I know but thanks for Radio Tray. Wasn't aware of it. Very nice!

GE can easy be installed, if you package it on a 32bit system and install the resulting 32bit deb.

Aha -- good to know, thanks towo.  I tried that earlier and it did not work, but I believe you that it will work today.

Today, 17 DEC 2012, it seems to be fixed, on my 64-bit system with Nvidia graphics.

First, install googleearth-package, lsb-core, ia32-libs-gtk, and libfreeimage3.

Then, as user, run "make-googleearth-package".  As root, install the package with dpkg.

This reminds me of the old saying ... "patience is a virtue".  :)

Thanks for the confirmation dibl, I hope to try it as soon as I get some free time.  GoogleEarth was the only program I wasn't able to get running in 64 bit.  If it works for me, that will make my conversion from 32 to 64 bit complete.  \o/ Yay.
