[EN] ISO 2023-03-15 does not boot?
« on: 2023/05/20, 02:53:39 »
I downloaded most recent ISO (2023-03-15) and wrote to USB using win32diskimager, but it does not seem to boot on my Lenovo P1 (UEFI boot) - did I miss anything?

It boots for me. I used dd to put it on the USB stick.

At boot time:
'UEFI Firmware Settings' (F10, or F11, or F12, or Del)
or
'Select boot target' (F2 ?)

does anything work?

Pages 47-48 of the siduction user manual shows how to use dd to write the ISO to your USB stick. Get the manual here. (pdf download).

If you boot your PC and in the UEFI BIOS your drive with Windows is listed first in the boot order, the PC will boot your Windows as usual.

You must therefore go into the UEFI BIOS during the boot process and either change the order or select the device to be booted directly. The key you use to enter the UEFI BIOS (in my case F2 or DEL or F8 ) often varies. However, it should be displayed briefly on the screen.

@dibl: Da er den win32diskimager verwendet hat, gehe ich mal davon aus, dass er sonst Windows nutzt und mit dd nicht soviel anfangen kann.

True.

If that is the case, Rufus is a highly recommended tool, available for Windows.

Yes, rufus is a very good/simple tool. However, transferring an image to a USB stick is so easy that I don't think Microsoft has messed up here.

I rather suspect that the bootable image is simply not found as a prioritised image by the UEFI.

Let me explain: I have a new laptop with blank hard drive in. I was playing with booting multiple distro isos (Arch, Debian, Ubuntu) and I came across Siduction. I downloaded two Siduction isos (KDE and XFCE), I used the same tool I used for all other distros (win32diskimager) to write the iso to the USB stick and Siduction (both isos) was the only one that did not boot immediately like all other distros. Instead I got a boot menu with USB stick (and the blank internal drive) and when I select the stick it still does not boot. I am going to try Rufus.

I will give the dead horse one more kick ...

If you have a second USB stick available, and you are able to put the Ubuntu (or Debian or Arch) ISO on it, then you could boot that and use dd to burn the siduction ISO on the stick that you have been using. From years ago, I remember trying UNetbootin and various other software tools, on Windows, and dd is the only method that never fails to make a bootable siduction stick.

But, maybe Rufus is better than those old Windows tools.  :)

Not only a USB stick, but also an SD card is possible. I myself prefer and have used dd for years. dd does not change anything, is not interested in the file system or contents; it blindly copies byte for byte.

Hmm,
imho dd is also available for Windows.
Maybe from here:

@ReinerS: The website was last updated in summer 2010, the files of 0.6beta3 are from 2009. I have more confidence in dd/Linux.

The stopping point turned out to be a Secure Boot option. I turned it off and I was able to boot Siduction (and EndeavourOS as well). Thank you.
