I love my updates!

If you dislike updates, you will dislike siduction. You don't have to update every day, but just like Arch, if you wait for a week, then you will have a bucket full of updates. It's the same problem -- the software is under active development and updated packages are continuously flowing into the repos (and then to our installed systems).

I'm a happy siduction/aptosid/sidux user for ~14 years, desktops and laptops and notebooks. I use qemu/KVM, LibreOffice, gimp, wire, and browsers, mostly. Proprietary graphics and open graphics. It's all good.

Hi Max, willkommen bei siduction,

ich persönlich nutze siduction und seine Vorgänger bereits seit vielen Jahren produktiv bei der Arbeit. Auf meinem Hauptrechner läuft seit sechs Jahren die gleiche Installation, die ich nach dem Kauf des Rechners installiert hatte. Und du kannst mir glauben, die wird täglich gequält.

Du hast vermutlich das Image von der Hauptseite gewählt, ohne zu wissen, dass wir auf https://testbuilds.siduction.org/ aktuellere ISOs zur Verfügung stellen, die zwar nicht langzeitgetestet sind, aber für eine Installation ausreichen. Derzeit warten wird auf Plasma 6 in Unstable, bevor wir eine neue Veröffentlichung herausgeben.

Was die Maintenance angeht: Um große Paketmengen wie du sie erlebt hast, zu vermeiden, solltest du einmal in der Woche ein Updatedurchführen, nachdem du im forum in der Rubrik 'Upgrade Warnings' nachgeschaut hast, ob gerade etwas im Busch ist.
Generell nutzen wir dist-upgrade (oder full-upgrade) und führen dies bevorzugt in der Konsole aus. Wenn du mit Snapshots arbeiten möchtest, empfehle ich vorher die Lektüre des entsprechenden Eintrags in unserem Handbuch. Ansonsten scheinst du durch die von dir benutzten Distros für siduction gut geeignet. Du kannst uns auch gerne im IRC mit Fragen löchern. Und nun viel Spaß mir siduction

Moin Moin!

Nach einer längeren Reise über diverse Distros bin ich hier gelandet. Siduction hat mich neugierig gemacht, ein rollendes Debian ist schon ganz nett und zudem aus deutschen Landen. Hier kann man auch mal in der Muttersprache kommunizieren. Aktuell nutze ich Debian 12 mit XFCE, ist quasi unzerstörbar und fast schon ein wenig langweilig. Und ja, XFCE kann man mit etwas Arbeit auch richtig schick bekommen. Nach einiger Zeit mit Distros wie z.B. Arch und Slackware habe ich viel gelernt von dem was unter der Haube abläuft und bin in der Lage einiges was schief läuft selbst zu beheben. Ich könnte mal wieder etwas Abwechslung gebrauchen 

Meine Frage an die Nutzer: Wie stabil läuft Siduction durchschnittlich? Ich nutze das System täglich zum Arbeiten, hätte aber kein Problem ab und zu mal Hand anzulegen. Wenn es nicht 2x die Woche ist.. Allerdings habe ich in meiner Seduction Test-VM gesehen, dass Snapshots eingerichtet werden, die man auch booten kann. Sehr nett, habe ich sonst mit Timeshift / grub-btrfs immer zu Fuß eingerichtet. Insofern kann man bei einem Fehlerhaften Update zumindest die Bude wieder schnell lauffähig bekommen und sich später um das Problem kümmern. Etwas geschockt hat mich aber die gigantische Menge an ersten Updates nach der Neu-Installation schon. Hätte nicht gedacht, dass das System nach der Orgie überhaupt noch bootet. Aber bisher alles schick.

Vielleicht könnt ihr kurz über die Erfahrungen der täglichen Nutzung berichten.

I think you should make a fundamental decision:

- Do you want a distribution that receives few updates because it is based on a stable version (e.g. of Debian)? However, this will mainly only provide you with security updates and will be based on older proven package versions.

- Or would you like to take advantage of a rolling release with up-to-date packages? Then you will have to make friends with regular updates. This also applies to Siduction.

I myself have been using Debian since Potato and later only distributions based on Debian/unstable. With apt and dpkg, Debian has a tried and tested package management system that also makes it easy to manage Siduction in daily use.

I personally update daily so that the process remains manageable. This morning there were 45 packages, but most of them concerned libreoffice. Really big updates are rare and occur during transitions (Perl, switching the time format to 64 bit, ...).

I'm a bit more relaxed about the documentation. All the important things about installation, administration etc. are included in the Siduction manual. Otherwise you can find help here in the forum.

Hi there,
with siduction you might as well have 100 updates per day, depending on the chosen desktop and/or installed packages. But that is not every day. For example, if there are updates for Plasma or LibreOffice, that already accounts for many packages. When running siduction, you should not be update-lazy and update at least once per week. Accumulating too many packages could cause clutter. Quite a few of us in the team have been running siduction productive for many years. The install I am writing from is six years old, and I bet there are much older ones around. So, if you know your Debian package management, you have a quite stable OS at your hands, despite its unstable nature. It is a good idea to check the 'Upgrade Warnings' section on the forum before doing your regular dist-upgrade.

When it comes to documentation, of course, we cannot compete with Arch. Who can? But we believe that our siduction manual is quite comprehensive as well. Of course, I am biased, but maybe siduction can stop your wandering days as a distro hopper. Just give it a try,

I have been using Debian ever since Squeeze. Since then I've been going through about every "main" distro (except Gentoo or Knoppix) OpenSUSE, Fedora, Ubuntu (cough), Mint + LMDE, and have previously been on Arch. Did vanilla Arch install, but went for the others, like ArcoLinux, Endeavour, Garuda. But right now, I'm using Sparky. A distro based on Debian Test Branch.

The reason I left Arch, is because I didn't like the daily ~100 updates. And if you skip a couple days, you get a HELL lotta updates. Now Debian Testing has a lot of updates too, but as many. Is Siduction like Arch, in a way? Just not as well documented?

Enlighten me, guys.

If you have an lxqt install -- hold off on full-upgrade  -- right now d-u removes libfm-qt13 lxqt lxqt-core lxqt-panel -- probably not a good idea.

Access to the "gatech.edu" repository is denied ("forbidden") at all. Try to access it with a browser... May be, just temporarily unavailable.
Has nothing to do with certificates or keys.

Meine Frage lautet nach Ersatz, nicht nach wiederbeleben.

der selbst zitierte Link https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1065312 zeigt, wie schwierig bis "unmöglich" derzeit ein Ersatz zu finden ist. Und - siehe den momentan letzten Beitrag dort - vielleicht ergibt sich daraus ja ein Maintainerwechsel.
