Title: How safe is it for a DU?
Post by: GoinEasy9 on 2018/10/11, 17:39:24
On my LXQt install a DU will only remove xsane. I was wondering if I should put it on hold like I see libsane-common and sane-utils are.

On my KDE install, 19 libraries want to be removed. They all seem to have replacements coming in. Has anyone had any problems?

It's been a week or two since I've upgraded, and I just want to see if there are problems beforehand.
Thanks in Advance

Thanks jure

After you posted I started my DU, and so far, it looks good here too.

I also noticed that there's an xsane-common coming in on the LXQt install, so, we're gonna let xsane go.

Ah, 'twas a good day to Update.

Thanks Again

@GoinEasy9:

Does xsane work with xsane-common after remove of the package xsane?

Just tested: With xsane gone I can't use my scanner any longer in gimp. Install xsane again brings libsane1 into my system. I hope that the bug (https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=908681) is solved. There was a little bit of trouble with it (https://forum.siduction.org/index.php?topic=7329.0)

Hi
I had to reinstall xsane, but once I did, it found my HP wireless printer on it's own and is ready to scan.
There was some weirdness when configuring packages:

 Preconfiguring packages ...
dpkg: libsane:amd64: dependency problems, but removing anyway as you requested:
 sane-utils depends on libsane.
 sane depends on libsane.
 hplip depends on libsane.
 colord depends on libsane.

Except for that the install looked ok.  Sometimes I thank hplip for the ease of using the printer and the scanner.  I may be wrong, but, once I got used to installing hplip on all my new installs, everything worked easier.

I'm probably going to have to look it up, but, didn't we get rid of libsane recently for libsane1?

Just saw Geier0815's post, I have libsane1 installed.

I withheld two packages when xsane was to be removed for a few days about 2 weeks ago:  libsane-common, libsane1.  Eventually, xsane was no longer flagged for removal.  However, there was an apt-news comment stating that xsane was no longer being maintained upstream.  I wonder what will happen since the package is required for scanners.

I can't comment about KDE since I don't run that desktop environment.

I distro upgrade every other day.

It won't resolve itself apparently. See https://forum.siduction.org/index.php?topic=7370.0 (https://forum.siduction.org/index.php?topic=7370.0) for how to proceed. Worked here after a bit of a hiccup.
