[EN] [Solved] USB Keyboard Stopped Working After Update
« on: 2015/06/09, 19:12:29 »
Hi,

I use a Kinesis Advantage USB keyboard with my Lenovo X230 laptop. It worked fine until yesterday when I updated my system.  I have tested the keyboard with another laptop -- it works fine.  I also tested another regular USB keyboard with this laptop -- and that works fine as well.  It seems that the keyboard works immediately after I plug it in, and continues to work as long as I continue to hit keys.  However, if I stop clicking for more then 5 secs, it stops working permanently.

I'm not sure what to do.

When I plug it in, I see the following in syslog:

Code: [Select]

==> kern.log <==

I've tried downgrading my kernel.  The lowest version I tried was 3.17-4, but that did not seem to solve the issue.

Is there any other packages that might interfere with a USB keyboard?  IS there anything else I might try to downgrade or uninstall?

I would really appreciate any kind of suggestion.  I am completely at a loss.

Hi,

I can't give you a solution, but maybe you can get more info what happens.

You may open a terminal and order:

Code: [Select]
journalctl -f
This will show you the last 10 lines of your actual journal and evrything what gets written new. So maybe you get a message when the keyboard stops working.

Thank you for your suggestion.

When I plug in the keyboard, I get the following.  When it stops working (after a few seconds) there are no new messages in the log. Not sure how to interpret this.

I don't know whether someone can get a use out of this information, but when I disconnect an USB-Stick I get the same lot of messages about this "colord[] cannot find module stuff" as showing up in your journal after the keyboard is recogniced.

I don't know what this messages mean and I can't get something what would make sence in the context out of google either, sorry.

Hello,

I had similar issues with USB devices after upgrading udev (from 215-18 to 220-5 and -6). I don't recommend downgrading udev, libudev1 and libsystemd0 to 215-18, but mention it so you can try. ;)

The issue is most probably related to https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=%23788498
Udev maintainer has been traveking the last few days with limited ressources. I guess this will be fixed soon.

@oneself,

Wild guess(*): make the USB autosuspend is not working properly with your keyboard (doesn't wake up), and maybe with some update this was activated.

(*) but hinted by your explanation that it happens when you stop typing for a few seconds.

Check with powertop ("Tunables") the status of "Autosuspend for USB device" or "Autosuspend for unknown USB device". If you manage to detect your keyboard and it's "Good" hit ENTER to change it to "Bad" (i.e. no autosuspend).

I've heard keyboards and mice can have problems with this.

Thank you all for your help.

I downgraded udev to version 215-6 (by reinstalling my system and placing a hold on udev -- there must be a better way to do this), and now things seem to work.  So, I think that this is definitely the issue.

I also tried disabling USB autosuspend using powertop, but that didn't seem to help.

using apt-get install udev=$version (or aptitude) may be a better idea

@melmarker Regarding downgrading:  But how do I find out which versions are available?

Let's take udav as an example, which is what I needed here.  I have another machine that is fully upgraded.  If I run apt-cache policy for udev on it, I get:

Code: [Select]
> apt-cache policy udev
udev:
  Installed: 220-6
  Candidate: 220-6
  Version table:
 *** 220-6 0
        500 http://http.debian.net/debian/ unstable/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Even when I try guessing the version based on the other machine, it doesn't find it:
Code: [Select]

apt-get install udev=215-6
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Version '215-6' for 'udev' was not found

How would I have been able to downgrade if only one version is available?

without matching repo entries for the respective repo apt has no chance - /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ may be worth a look

If one is lucky the package one likes to use is to find in debian testing, so one can add the testing repo to ones debian.list temporary. Then:
Code: [Select]
apt-get update
apt-get install $package=version_of_package
This  also should pull in all dependencies needed. Then:
Code: [Select]
apt-mark hold $packagethen deactivate testing repo and:
Code: [Select]
apt-get update
If it is not in testing but one doesn't flush apts cache very often, which, for this reason, I don't do (here in case of udev):
Code: [Select]
ls -l /var/cache/apt/archives | grep udev

This may get very extendet if there are many dependencies to solve... and dependencies which have new dependencies.........

After that: set the package needed to hold, there is no need to set every dependency on hold, too.

If a fixed version is available, just unhold the package
Code: [Select]
apt-mark unhold $package and:
Code: [Select]
apt-get update
apt-get install $package

BUT, what I should not forget to say:

DOWNGRADING CAN BE DANGEROUS AND CAN RENDER YOUR WHOLE SYSTEM UNUSABLE INSTEED OF A SINGLE UNUSABLE COMPONENT.

AND MAYBE YOU CAN KEEP THE PIECES
