Title: noX installation / gnome
Post by: hannes on 2022/11/20, 16:35:34
Hey folks,
I wanted to test out siduction as I've heard it's a refined version of debian sid - duh. I am most comfortable with the Gnome desktop and don't mind manually installing my distros, so I went with the noX iso. The issue here is, I didn't really find much info in the wiki or whatever on how to properly install that version, I tried looking for some installers, but to no avail.
If you could point me in the right direction, so that I can test out siduction I'd be super thankful! :)
P.S.:
Is there any specific reason as to why there's no Gnome ISO?

Cheers!

Well, first of all. welcome!

To install the noX iso, use the cli-installer, but there is a bug, the /etc/fstab seems not to be generated, please check this.
Maybe you have to do it manually, this shouldn't be a problem.
Or use the xorg iso, so xou have the most important software like the xserver and usefully firmware.
Also we have iwd and network manager configured to be used with your WiFi.
in noX use iwctl or the cli tool from the network manager package. There is a manual page for it.
The manual is worth to be consulted.

Why there is no gnome iso?
We do not have one in our team who use gnome and is willing to support it.
Most of our team is using kde or xfce,
sorry, we are a very small team.
So if some one is willing to configure and setting up gnome for our iso , he/she is welcome, don't be shy.

alright thanks! I was looking for "cli-installer" but no such program was installed. I'll try out the X version later :)

I just tested the Xorg ISO and I only have the options to install the main DEs and can't skip that step in Calamares. What to do now?

install the fluxbox version, then install gnome or what you want.
Btw. there is a new testbuild of nox on https://testbuilds.siduction.org,

alright thanks! Though I didn't have a fluxbox option, all there were, were the main DEs. I followed the link on the homepage to download the ISO, so I should have the right file ...-21.3.0-... is that the correct version?

https://testbuilds.siduction.org/xorg/

here you find new builds. not really tested but should work.

huh that is odd. I downloaded the latest X-iso and same problem. If I deselect whatever DE I chose the installation ends up failing

Question:

Did you  try to install the iso first?
Then choose gnome to install witch apt update && apt full-upgrade && apt install foo?
Or what you did?
I do not know what you are doing!?

Ah, now I understand what happens , we are testing a netinstall ISO to choose some DEs on the fly, and this installer find its way in to that ISO, sorry (we have to talk about in our team).

So, you have to download the official xorg-iso from our website.

Hm that is odd, even with the official xorg-iso, calamares doesn't let me choose a version without a desktop environment. Is there a seperate installer, other than Calamares?

not odd, that is a feature, xorg comes with fluxbox, no chance, what you want is the nox ISO from testbuilds, use cli-Installer, or eat fluxbox and install later gnome, after it, you can purge what you want.

I understand that much! :) But if X comes with fluxbox, why is it not a choice in calamares? Or do I HAVE to use the cli-installer on the xorg-iso.
Thanks for the patience :)

But I do not understand you. Sorry!

Normally, you do not have a choice to choose between DE's (only with our test xorg-netinstall.iso you have a choice)

That is not the debian installer, with our calamares-installer you should only to have the choice to install what you see or not and with xorg you see fluxbox with some tiny modifications not much but.....

I just started to download the xorg-iso, need some time (it needs ours), I will test it later (qemu) that evening to understand what happens.

Well, it went faster than I expected.

Please try following iso

https://testbuilds.siduction.org/xorg/amd64/siduction-21.3.0-wintersky-xorg-amd64-202211221947.iso
You will find a md5 file and a manifest there too, https://testbuilds.siduction.org/xorg/amd64/

I tested it with qemu, quick and dirty, it should work.
The manual is German, on https://manual.siduction.org you will find a more current one, also in en!

Alright thank you! I just started the installer and got the option between Cinnamon, XFCE, LXQT and KDE. I have tested both the current xorg and the untested one. Both had the same issue.
