I was just testing my new scanner and noticed the current sid version of simple-scan 42.5-2 installs but does not show in any menus and will not start, there is another version 3.30.1.1-1.1 (siduction) which installs and works perfectly anyone know why
the default version doesn't work.

You can create a menu entry yourself under KDE in any category (e.g. graphics).
Alternatively, you can use other scan programmes. I like to use Skanlite myself. Both Simple-scan (42.5-2) and Skanlite work without any problems with my Canon LiDE 300.

Hmm, i rarely use any other scan-program than Xsane.
Has imho the most usefull features.

Xsane has a lot of features and I use it when I need to make fine adjustments to contrast, colour, brightness etc.
If I just want to scan a few documents quickly, I prefer the lite versions of the SANE front ends.
I think this is also titan's intention.

Thanks I will give skanlite a try, I find Xsane a bit clunky

I run siduction with Gnome and Simple-Scan 42.5 works and integrates perfectly.
For me, Simple-Scan gives the best out-of-the-box quality and all necessary options. It is lovely finetuned over the years like many other Gnome Apps with a focus on easiness and quality.

Discovered Simple-scan does install OK it just gets renamed document scanner by KDE but I think I will be using skanlite from now on, it has more features than simple-scan and is more intuitive than Xsane

For my purposes Gscantopdf works great. It allows you to import other files to build a larger multi paged document.

gscantopdf -> gscan2pdf
You need to install or have installed a lot of Gnome stuff.

I'm already on the GTK side of things so I didn't notice too much
