The removals are due to KF 5.37 rushing into Sid. Since the set is not complete yet, packages are to be removed. when KF isd done, Plasma 5.10.5 should follow soonish and KDE will once again be uptodate in sid.

Didn't go well for me as I can't get to the KDE desktop.

The sddm login comes up but there is a different sddm login theme from the one I had previously used. Also the session is empty and the language is USA (I use en-gb). The language changes to en-gb once the password is entered so I guess login is successful. But from there on in it just hangs at the sddm login page.

I did a quick check to see if the graphical.target had been set and it was.

Logging in via the terminal and trying to startx just produces a blank screen ie no cursor.

Any help to fix this would be much appreciated rather than I clean out KDE config and perhaps reinstall KDE.

I may not reply for a hour or two as I have a dental appointment (ouch!) around mid day.

Just checked the status of sddm and found:

The only file in /var/lib/sddm is  state.conf which denotes the user and "Session=/usr/share/xsessions/plasma.desktop" but /usr/share/xsessions doesn't exist.

Or sddm and maybe more is really broken on your system or you try to use a custom theme and don't know how it works!

Of course it should be there. Why do you think I posted it? The point is not that it isn't there but why is it not there?

As for your other remarks:
Of course I typed it. It's too obvious that I did. Is that a complaint? It was easier for me at the time. Apart from a typo/s the output is substantially correct.

startx produced a cursorless black screen. startkde did nothing (anyway I think that was KDE4 command not a kf5 command).

I have not installed/reinstalled sddm. All I did was apt update && apt full-upgrade. From a fully functioning machine to a box which can't log into a graphical interface.

As usual it looks as if I'm going to have to work this one out myself.

There was just some confusion over the directory mentioned, which didn't fit expectations. But you've explained that. No biggie.
Are you saying that the directory isn't there, or the file? Either way, have you tried putting the file in place where it's being looked for? I can't offer you anything as to why it should not be there, but perhaps putting it in place would help? This is my version:

Fixed my problem. Quite easy really.
sddm seemed to be doing its work but clearly some desktop files were missing.
apt  -s install kde-plsma-desktop showed some packages were indeed missing i.e.libkf5runner5, milou, plasma-desktop, plasma-workspace.

Installed them and KDE desktop was back up and running.

How stuff like plasma-desktop and plasma-workspace came to be removed I don't know. the was no hint during the DU and I never saw them being removed.
