For some time now when I do apt-get update, it attempts to fetch translation files many times until finally giving up. On this occasion it tried each about 40 times but sometimes it is hundreds.

There are similar lines for main and contrib, and also deb-multimedia and virtualbox repos but not debian repos.
dist-upgrade completes successfully but obviously the update takes a very long time. It is a Desperado Reloaded installation that has been regularly upgraded. I tried changing sources to udel or siduction.org but no difference. Any ideas how to fix? Did I break my locales?
