still wants to remove at least mysql-workbench, poedit, powertop and 10 or so libraries, haven't checked but it might be that most or all of them have replacements...

1. Start with language de, timezone Berlin and toram option
2. whiteroom nox starts without errors, using cli-installer for installation
3. Installation without errors.
4. Rebbot without errors

Trying to make a dist-upgrade
1. aptitude is removed and some other packages but IMHO nothing important
2. The dist-upgrade ends without any error
3. aptitude is reinstallable

yesterday evening I've tried to add cinnamon flavour to successful xfce installation, I've described above:

1. Is possible without errors
2. Adding further cinnamon based stuff per synaptic is also possible
3. Working with cinnamon ssettings and filemanager nemo is possible

cinnamon and lxqt are flavours I'll take a look at from time to time, different DEs but both interesting for me.

No, it is the right time, please read first articel of this thread, then I hope you will understand, that I test different flavours of siduction because of gcc transition in unstable repo :-)

@holgerw: but it is pointless - some things that run now may be broken 6 hours later and vice versa - and it will be for the next few month i'm affraid.

@freedom: Why, a indian summer intallation will work unaffected, upgrades via snapshot until 31.07 too - after that you are in the same situation like any other siduction user.

I think, when it is possible to get a complete installation of xfce e.g., taking whiteroom build as basic system, and when it is also possible to make D-U and to add some stuff - some kde applications are installable - then you can get a working siduction and you can wait with further D-U, until apt doesn't remove important stuff.

Is it possible to have plasma 5 KDE that way?
I mean, installing siduction-kde ISO, upgrading with 31.07 snapshot and installing Santa's KDE from kde-next repo?

@holgerw: i beg to differ - for a normal user it is sufficient ot take our latest release and use it as it is - i would recommend to update to the latest possible snapshot (31.08) i think - after doing so i would only touch the system if i encounter serious security breaks - in that case i would try to upgrade the package in charge, don't use it of find a alternative.

Of curse one could try to use apt upgrade or apt install to get some current packages installed - but i would not to suggest it to people using kde or gnome as things will break. Beside of that i run my dist-upgrades daily, the only disadvantage so far is that i lost my teamviewer - its to much effort to maintain a multiarch system these days - and if a package break that i need - i rebuild it with proper dependencies (or a new release) - unfortunally not everyone can do so.

Unfortunally we don't know what breaks nex, we don't also not whent, its a little bit rough outside in sid land - so if one is not a developer or need a working machine i would hereby strongly suggest not to use the latest packages - buy hey, its only me, everyone is free to spend his time as one want to - i only see much sense in it, because we know that things are broken, will be broken, stay broken - or have other faults introduced which aren't visible at first sight. So if you find breakages which shouldn't be (false packaging esp) you should file a bug, that will be helpful. if you find current packages with false dependencies (boost1.55 or such things) - file a bug, that will help a lot.

@freedom: You should  really ask santa about it - but i'm really sure what the answer will be: try it in a virtual machine and have fun, if it works and not so much important things break - be happy, otherwise be patient And i'm sure too, that santa will make a post if it is save to upgrade.
