Norbert Preining will go on publishing his KDE packages as he had before. Working with the KDE/Qt team did not work out for historical reasons. Norbert is one to speak up and there is a cabal in Debian that dislikes that. So he was stripped of his developer rights 2 or 3 years ago. And on the KDE/Qt team there is at least one guy who disliked him helping out. Debian in some corners is not a nice place to work in.

I am using Norbert's packages from the start, and they work fine for me.

@devil,

fully agree. Norbert's packages work here without a hitch.

Hello Dibl

https://www.preining.info/blog/2020/05/kde-plasma-5-18-5-for-debian/

it works

Vielen dank!

EDIT 6 JUN 2020: I just enabled Preining's repo and ran a full-upgrade.  It was a little scary, looking at the list of removals.  I saw plasma-desktop in the removals and of course that is needed.  First, on a system I can afford to trash, I went ahead with the full-upgrade.  When it was finished, I reinstalled plasma-desktop and of course it came in from the Preining repo, with most of the supporting packages needed for a KDE/Plasma desktop. Then I tried full-upgrade again, and this time the list of removals was very short.  I tested my 2 critical productivity packages, quemu/kvm and zulucrypt, and they're in good shape, so I went ahead and did the same process on my productivity system, and all seems solid here. I appreciate the OP and the tip about his repos.  Thanks!

Thanks dibl for the information.I will wait until the summer ends (September, October) and then see, if we have plasma 5.19.

If not I will also switch. I will not wait for an upgrade another 2,5 years... So thanks for the information. It is really helpfull!

I can't speak about KDE, but several years ago Norbert was the one who took the ball and ran with it for the Sigil .epub editing program. Sigil was Python3 and QT5 and from a non-linux but open source developer.   Norberts binaries for Sigil were top notch.  And then Debian caught up and he moved onto other chores.

He does the same with Calibre now and is always ahead of Debian.

^If I want to test it,
- I download the last kde-iso of 04.05.2020
- after the installation I change the repos to Preining
- and make a dist-upgrade/full-upgrade

Are there any other suggestions, anything noteworthy ?   :)

@unklarer -- that should work.  The control to split the dolphin window has moved to the upper right. You might lose a KDE package or two in the process, but you can reinstall it after the full-upgrade.

^^ @dibl, it didn't work   :-\
It took me two tries.   ;D

Code: [Select]
$ inxi -Sxxx
System:    Host: plasma Kernel: 5.6.17-towo.1-siduction-amd64 x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 10.1.0
           Desktop: KDE Plasma 5.18.5 tk: Qt 5.12.5 wm: kwin_x11 dm: SDDM
           Distro: siduction 18.3.0 Patience - kde - (202005041058) base: Debian GNU/Linux bullseye/sid

#1
as written, after installation, the repo's replaced.
Then update && dist-upgrade
437 packages to update; 20 to remove (including: kde-plasma-desktop; plasma-desktop; plasma-workspace)

New installation of plasma-desktop required
libappstreamqt2 and libqalculate21, which was either the wrong version or not available as a package at all.

The system played broken in the further course.   ::)

#2
Reinstall and then update the system (771 to update; 21 new and 3 to remove).
libappstreamqt2 appeared in the correct version
libqalculate21 was only available in experimental

experimental-repo and the npreinig-repos activated.
See for yourself, plasma-desktop was no longer for disposition:

Probably my way was a detour, because I could take the experimental-ISO.

The system behaves as usual.   :)
