Updating sane-backends introduces new bugs: #908681 (https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=908681)
-
Piper: +1I let the sane packages be removed and re-installed what I needed ie. colord libkf5sane5 and xsane. No problems so far.
-
@clubex
I actually don't have a problem, I just posted what my du looked like before I did the du which looks like this after
Reading state information... Done
Calculating upgrade... Done
The following packages have been kept back:
libsane-common
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded.
I could do this, but, at the moment I won't (different reasons)
apt purge libsane-common
The following packages will be REMOVED:
colord* kolourpaint* kolourpaint4* libkf5sane5* libsane-common* libsane1* libsane1:i386* sane* sane-utils* simple-scan* xsane*

Reading that thread is not encouraging. I hope "someone" takes some responsibility -- more than I see there.
I'm not in the mood to reinstall printers today, that are currently working just fine. I think I will wait awhile and see whether the situation gets better.

Yeah, a little mess ;)
-
On my system (simply openbox) full-upgrade indicated libsane-common to be kept back this morning.
Reinstall of libsane-common showed to me, that libsane1 had to be replaced by libsane.
Then the upgrade of sane/xsane worked fine with no problems.
Could libsane1 be the cause of all your problems too?
-
libsane1 was just insane :D

Does that mean libsane1 is dead and libsane is back?

Not really the end of the story - so stay tuned.

Today I re-installed libsane and after a du all works fine.
-
Hopefully all the sane related packages can be rebuilt against libsane and then things will be "sane" again (pun).
-
Lets just keep our fingers crossed. :)

außer Sane will dist-upgrade bei mir auch kde-full und kdegraphics entfernen.

Thanks Piper,
it worked.
I read the mentioned post before, just was afraid to remove the full kde (kde-full).
-
As I as usual don't know what this is about, maybe it's a kde problem only or?
Anyway, on two xfce computers I have now had some problems with apt wanting to remove a few packages probably related to sane. I did like this.
First I just install libsane, that worked like libsane1 was removed libsane was installed and after that I could do a full d-u without any removals.
If this is not relevant to this topic the please moderator remove all of it.
-
Unfortunately it isn't solved completely - so these questions and answers are valid - and can change from day to day untli this mess is fully fixed. I hope this will be soon.
-
Very true it might take a little time to fix it completely, however the work a rounds discussed here have proven very helpful in keeping my scanner working. Therefore a special thanks to all for providing the insight. :)
-
I haven't tried any workarounds, but after a few weeks of 14 to remove, everything came right about a month ago . . . until the new version of libsane-common appeared last week. I'll wait it out again.
-
drb, you should really get rid of libsane1 before more problems start
apt purge libsane-common
apt install colord kolourpaint kolourpaint4 libkf5sane5 libsane-common sane sane-utils xsane
apt update; apt full-upgrade
-
@piper - I'll probably have to take the plunge. I've previously struggled to get my Epson 4490 scanner working, so hopefully iscan and the iscan plugin reinstall without issues.
-
I have a brother mfcj880dw and it just works (after the purge & reinstall) didn't have to do a thing ;)
-
what about an simple
apt --install libsane and after it apt full-upgrade? Maybe first try with the -s option to see if it is safe to do.
-
That's what worked for my Samsung, after removing libsane1 and installing libsane it seems to be working fine. :)
-
OK now it is working for me too, after noting the packages that were removed and then reinstalled them after purging libsane1.
-
with the installation of libsane, libsane1 should be removed automatically, no need to remove it before installing libsane, for my system it worked and i didn't had to reinstall needed software, because it wasn't removed by installing libsane.

This was not the case with 3 machines here

On my machine several packages got removed, but noting them and letting them go then reinstalling them worked fine.

Here, my ancient Epson Perfection 1640SU scanner and only slightly newer HP LasterJet P1606dn printer continue to work perfectly with the new packages.
-
Hopefully going forward we won't have some Debian dev make such decisions again about library versioning.
-
@DeepDayze, sometimes we have to make do with what we are given good or bad we need to make the most out of it. ;)

Not all scanners are supported by sane. My Epson 4490 requires fiddling with an iscan plugin to work. A list of those supported / not supported at http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html (http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html)
PS Bitten bullet and after installing 4490 plugin, scanner working OK. Also Firewire Nikon slide scanner and HP printer all OK.

Just an FYI - It's been close to 2 weeks since my last update. What worked for me was just to "apt remove libsane1", which upgraded and installed everything that it need too automatically, while only removing libsane1.
Apt-get dist-upgrade was normal after that.
Worked on both my KDE and LXQt installs.
-
yeah, i guess we can set it solved now.

^^Thanks, worth the wait. :)

In addition to other packages mentioned in this thread that will be removed, my list also includes hplip and hplip-gui. Has anyone else let these packages go and then been able to successfully reinstall without issue?
-
The hplip and hplip-gui applications were on my list to be removed, but, as I said in my previous post, removing libsane1 solved the problem.
-
Different on my end. If I attempt to apt purge libsane1 or libsane-common (as Piper suggested), hplip and hplip-gui are to be removed.

For a long time I installed libsane (this removed libsane1), then I could install libsane-common and hplip (I don't need hplip-gui, hp-setup -i is enough for me).

* Rename libsane1 back to libsane, make the renamed package provide libsane1

Correct. But, after libsane is installed, then hplip and hplip-gui can be reinstalled.

apt install libsane libsane1-

I allowed hp-lip and hplip-gui to go, as well as iscan and iscan plugin peculiar to my scanner, and then reinstalled the packages, including hp-lip and hplip-gui, that are removed.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this thread. I failed to notice that libsane1 and libsane1:i386 were to be removed.
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
acl colord-data hplip-data libavahi-client3:i386 libavahi-common-data:i386
libavahi-common3:i386 libbz2-1.0:i386 libcolorhug2 libgdbm-compat4:i386
libgdbm6:i386 libgusb2 libieee1284-3 libieee1284-3:i386 libpci3:i386
libperl5.28:i386 libqt5designer5 libqt5help5 libsane-common libsane-hpaio
libsnmp30:i386 python3-dbus.mainloop.pyqt5 python3-notify2 python3-pyqt5
python3-sip update-inetd xsane-common
Use 'sudo apt autoremove' to remove them.
The following packages will be REMOVED:
colord hplip hplip-gui libsane1 libsane1:i386 printer-driver-postscript-hp sane
sane-utils xsane
The following packages have been kept back:
iptables libip4tc0 libip6tc0 libiptc0 libxtables12
The following packages will be upgraded:
libsane-common
1 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 9 to remove and 5 not upgraded.
Need to get 584 kB of archives.
After this operation, 27.4 MB disk space will be freed.
So, I just performed a full-upgrade and reinstalled all the removed packages with the exception of libsane1 and libsane1:i386.
However, this raises a question, at least for me. Would this have eventually worked itself out; i.e. the devs would have updated the packages to be removed so that they wouldn't be removed? Did the packages that were removed still have some kind of dependency on libsane1?
