[EN] [SOLVED]Skype crashes
« on: 2013/02/08, 03:34:14 »
Not sure where to put this problem so as Skype is non-free I figured I put it here in experimental section

I am having a problem with Skype 4.1 32 bit deb from the Skype site. When I open Skype, the system reboots as soon as I login.

Some details about my system:

I was unable to retrieve any log output as starting skype in terminal i got no error messages at all not even in syslog.

Where else can I look, as I'm almost sure it could be a kernel, application or library bug that's being triggered. Note that my display driver is up to date for the card I have. Any ideas?

Additional Note: I tried this with and without a camera connected.

That is strange.  Here skype 4.1 is working reliably -- better than some previous versions, in fact.  I just used it last night with no issues, on my 64-bit desktop, also with Nvidia graphics.

Code: [Select]
root@imerabox:/home/don# apt-cache policy skype
skype:i386:
  Installed: 4.1.0.20-1
  Candidate: 4.1.0.20-1
  Version table:
 *** 4.1.0.20-1 0
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

It's hard to think of what a user-space package could do to trigger a reboot. Have you run memtest lately -- maybe a memory stick is failing.

I've run memtest and no errors, even did a disk test as well.

Skype works on my debian Sid GNOME 3 partition..notably it has 3.6.10 kernel.

As my siduction install is 18 months old I may do a reinstall as I might have picked up a lot of old cruft along the way.

After it crashed again I booted off a siduction USB stick so that I can preserve the logs, and no errors or bugs found in syslog, Xorg.0.log, ~/.xsession.errors. Not even any reference to memory or disk problems either

4.1.0.20-1 works reliably here with mulitiarch. Used on a daily basis for a couple of hours. KDE with Intel HD3000 gfx.

@DeepDayze, I just crashed my siduction system for the second time in 3 days while working with the sound system (using audacity to record vinyl records).  It occurs to me that it is possible that there is some instability in the sound system, which in your case might be triggered by skype, and in my case by audacity or pulseaudio.  Just a stray thought.  It's too random to reproduce here -- just a sudden hang of everything with a bit of music repeating endlessly until the computer reboots itself.

I only have alsa here not PulseAudio garbageware but its possible the newest skype is not built against the latest Alsa.

But funny it worked in my plain Debian Gnome setup, which has PA setup

I had one more crash mid-day today, again while running audacity.  It was definitely audacity that first hung -- the pavucontrol window was still working, and I had time to open a terminal and kill the audacity process. But it all went south a few seconds later, and even magic SysRq couldn't reach it.  I looked at syslog and kern.log.  In kern.log there were a lot of ATA errors, beginning with "ata12: log page 10h reported inactive tag 26" which google says are typical when the systems stops addressing the drives -- I think that was a symptom, not a cause -- my drives are new.  But nothing in syslog.

I may try setting this test using a different desktop environment..I'm leaning towards bugs in alsa/gstreamer phonon backend that skype could be exposing

Bingo! Switching to VLC backend..no crash and sounds work. So now I found the problem and it seems gstreamer doesn't work properlywith skype via phonon, so there's bugs within phonon that the newest version of skype has exposed

However I kept all the gstreamer packages installed as other apps depend on them, and no issues there
