nvidia 343 incoming
« on: 2014/08/07, 13:33:54 »
The nvidia 343 driver drops support for all cards earlier than Geforce 400 (i.e. "Fermi" ) series.

Today, I see libxnvctrl0 and nvidia-settings moving to 343.xx version. Is it safe for users of cards that are getting dropped to install these?

most likely that the older generations will be supported by a new "legacy" driver...

libxnvctrl0 is from nvidia-settings and the new nvidia-settings should also work with older driver-versions.
It was a mistake by me to upload nvidia-settings to extra/unstable, it should go to extra/experimental equal to nvidia-driver.

Hi seasons,
The nvidia 343 driver drops support for all cards earlier than Geforce 400 (i.e. "Fermi" ) series.
I don't  get it what nvidia numbers do indicate. Is it my card is droped:
Code: [Select]
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation C79 [GeForce 9400] [10de:0861] (rev b1)?

Yes. When nvidia 343 hits unstable, we will probably have to switch to a package with a different name.

The list of supported nVidia GPU's are shown here:
ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/295.53/README/supportedchips.html

I have two 9800GT cards and they are still supported, as is the 9400 that ralul has.  If you go towards the bottom of the page I linked, you should see what cards will be covered by the 173 driver.  To my understanding, it's those cards that are currently covered by the 96 and 71 drivers, that will no longer be supported.

Since I've only recently started using the nVidia blob on my main siduction install, due to nouveau errors locking up my machine, I may not be totally up to date as to what the newer driver will or won't support, but, since the link is from the nVidia download site, I'm assuming it's up to date and accurate.

I didn't say that nvidia completely dropped support for those cards. In fact, they've guaranteed support for 5 years: http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3142

I am just saying that when 343.xx hits the repo, users of those cards will probably need to switch packages or they will end up dist-upgrading the regular nvidia packages to a version that does not support their card.

@seasons I understood what you posted, I just wanted to post the current list of nVidia GPU's and their current drivers, and share what I knew.  BTW - thanks for the link.  It shows that nVidia will be changing that appendix page when the 343 driver comes out, my 9800 and ralul's 9400 won't be covered by the new driver, I didn't know that.

Thanks for the info. Makes me a happy nvidia customer as propr. nvidia-340.24 runs smart for me and:
Quote from: nvidia
The Linux 340.* legacy driver series is the last to support the G8x, G9x, and GT2xx GPUs, and motherboard chipsets based on them. Support for new Linux kernels and X servers, as well as fixes for critical bugs, will be included in 340.* legacy releases through the end of 2019.
Happy, because probably Debian will have this package in the package tree somewhere further on.

If in doubt go to:
Code: [Select]
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us
Enter your card etc and see which drivers are compatible with it.

Woran könnte das wohl liegen? Bios Problem?
