Title: With Kernel 5.4 hdmi sounds no available
Post by: Mte90 on 2020/01/19, 17:07:58
I have this problems since few months and after a lot of testing, purge pulseaudio and so on I finished the idea for other debugging. So looking on reddit I found this https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=942803 and I was thinking, ehi I update always the kernel and maybe the problem is that because I didn't changed anything else.
So I installed linux-headers-5.3.14-towo.1-siduction-amd64 and now the audio on hdmi is back again.I just wanted to share here in case there is someone else with the issue and to report it.
PS: I was using the latest 5.4.11 kernel version.

Issues with pulseaudo I believe you.

Installing header files of a kernel, using a different kernel version, is definitely not the solution. Probably you have unknowingly changed something else at the same time.

Pulseaudo on plasma desktop is working well here:

Just to add more information:I tried installing that kernel without changing anything on pulseaudio, restart and now the audio was working.I have a Intel Haswell for HDMI on a laptop with 2 video cards and one is a Nvidia card.
My test with another kernel was the unique option that I didn't try, it is the first time that I did it.
Everything was updated to the latest version.

I can confirm also with the latest kernel in siduction still have that problem. There is anything that I can do to help in debugging?

Nvidia

...with nouveau or nvidia?

From time to time in combination with certain pulseaudio versions the issue occurs (in Ubuntu, Debian), when nvidia isn't installed, nouveau is used.

@Mte90 - what can i say - just switched my audio output to my monitor - it is connected via DP - so i guess it is just a misconfiguration

I am using proprietary nvidia driver.
Well the issue is just fixed switched to linux kernel 5.3 with any 5.4 version the audio with hdmi is not working.
Also now the settings for pulseaudio are the default one with no changes, so I don't know what kind of log I can share to understand the issue.

I was just investigating a bit and I saw those warning during kernel updates:

Seems related to https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=931930 and https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=950971
I don't know if these are the causes of my problem with the audio.

The important word there is "Possible" -- it is a hint for you if there is a problem with networking.  I have the same message on a HP laptop with Realtek chip.  If networking is working correctly on your system, you can disregard those messages.

There is a way to block updates for the kernel?I am just using the 5.3 because doesn't give any problem for me but as Siduction there is always a new kernel in few days.

You can remove the metapackages linux-image-siduction-amd64 and linux-headers-siduction-amd64 but eventually some other software will require a newer kernel so that's a suboptimal stopgap solution.
The latest kernel is 5.5.8-towo.1-siduction-amd64 , have you tried that? Are you sure the nvidia drivers built properly for the one you say doesn't work?
Some other things to try:
- In the Configuration tab of pavucontrol, switch off any devices which you are not using.
- PulseAudio exists a layer above ALSA and I have seen on occasion the volume showing full and meter displaying signal in pavucontrol just as you described, still with no sound. Open alsamixer in a terminal window (as user, not root) and make sure the volumes are up and not muted for the hdmi audio output.

Also post the output of
Code: [Select]
inxi -AG

I already did all this tests with pavucontrol and on alsamixer. It's just if I run with the 5.3 everything works without change anything, if I switch to aa kernel 5.4+ there is no anymore hdmi audio with the same settings.

I can try to remove the meta pacages, in case there will be issue asking for a new kernel I will see what to do.

Here, on my daughters Laptop, a Lenovo s540 with Intel integrated graphics,
there is the same Problem with 5.4 kernel. I still had the 5.3 around in the boot menues,
so the sound works with the old kernel.
No configurations have been inappropriately touched!
The PC is intensely used for remote schooling due Covid-19,
so no debugging is possible at the moment.

Thanks!

Same issue here with audio-devices like Mte90, with kernel 5.9.12-towo.1-siduction-amd64.
That workaround helped me:
Boot parameter:

intel_iommu=on, igfx_off

or

intel_iommu=off

I have to test with my laptop to see if it is replicateable.

I tested on my laptop qith kernel linux 5.9 and that trick is not working in my case.I will stay with 5.3 kernel to avoid any trouble.

Hmmh, tested once more, w/ kernel 5.10.3-towo.1-siduction-amd64. HDMI sound works w/ boot parameter "intel_iommu=off".
Maybe our machines are different, see my "inxi -ACGM" below.  That's all I can tell.  Stay safe.
