Title: some thoughts about the lack of newer releases
Post by: vilde on 2014/10/19, 14:57:02
I have a laptop running as a mediaplayer, have had that for a long time, the last weeks, maybe more there have been some trouble. The hard disk is starting (loudly wining up) sometimes more than one time every minute, sometimes less. Every time this happens the computer is lagging, looking at movies was only annoying. Tried to reinstall on the same hard disk and after an difficult and troublesome d-u I got the computer updated but the problem with lagging and hard disk wining up was still there.

I know, i didn't post about it here so I can't say that I didn't got help.

Then some days later, yesterday, i decide to try with another hard disk, ssd. I knew that it would be hard to install so I tried to update the installer before installation but that made the live session crash in to a shell where it was not possible to use the keyboard so I had to install with the installer on the iso. (xfce 64 bit, latest release). The install is working as usual but then doing d-u was a pain, after maybe ten stops with errors and apt-get -f install it didn't work anymore, the d-u failed and I gave up.

So now I'm running a non sid (Sparky Linux) dist on one of the every-day-used computers for the first time in many years. The lag is not there anymore and I can watch my movies again.

I will probably reinstall that computer again after a new release of siduction but for now I feel it's to much hassle to install with the old releases.

I want to point out that this is no complain and I know that all  of you on the siduction team are doing all that you can, I also know that I'm free to choose what distro I want and so on. I only want to tell that the lack of newer release made me choose another distro this time, probably and hopefully only temporary.

I think we are colse to a release... the freeze comes closer every day, so will be the next release!

The troublesome d-u can be attributed to an old snapshot, but your troubles with your hard disk may be due to something buggy in Sid.  Sparky Linux is based on Testing, so it's not really a fair comparison.  There are other distros based on Debian Sid and there's always Arch and it's derivatives if you prefer bleeding edge.

I did know that Sparky is testing and my try was to check if the trouble was because of the old hard disk, but because I couldn't install siduction on the new hard disk I never found out. I need my media computer and therefore I installed something else that was easy to install and works.

I didn't found another sid dist with xfce that has a reasonable new release.

And as I wrote I will  install siduction on that computer when I get a new release to use and make a quick install with no or less trouble.

We released a Cinnamon spin some days ago which works fine and can be used as base for installing other DEs as well.

Thank you devil, I thought about that but I'm don't really know how to get from that Cinnamon (witch I have tried :)  )to a nice working xfce environment, therefore I chose to do what I did. If I remeber right it's not really just to do a apt-get install xfce?

You could grab the manifest of the latest release ftp://ftp.spline.de/pub/siduction/iso/december/xfce/i386_2014-01-27_22-12/siduction-13.2.1-december-xfce-i386-201401272212.i386.manifest and extract the information which packages to install to get a working xfce desktop on top of the cinnamon dev release. There is also the information available for the amd64 architecture, which might differ slightly.
Or just wait for the freeze, which will be a good moment for an release.

That's a good idea, i tried it on a spare hard disk, it worked quite good, but I took the list of installed packages from an other updated xfce installation instead of the one from the manifest. Maybe I do that with my media_computer.

Thanks to advices from devil and michaaa62 in this thread I am now running my version of siduction, xfce on my media computer, installed with the cinnamon release as base, siduction-14.vilde-paintitblack-xfce   :)

If it works, I have a screenshot here, I have made it plain and quite empty as I want it.
