The solution is easy: apt purge xorg xserver-xorg or patience

Hmm - but it is not recommend to remove the -core - that will be the next problem, matching drivers for the new -core-ABI 8)

I had the same problem and I decided to install first
xserver-xorg-video-all

and make then the upgrade. Now I can not start in graphical mode.

I'm a newbe in siduction and need help.

@Thomas, sorry -- I was hoping my warning would prevent anyone from breaking their siduction system.  If you will study your apt and dpkg logs in /var you MIGHT be able to see how to "go back" by removing the packages that have been installed in your last upgrade, and replace any packages that were removed.

In general, it is usually easier to wait for transitions to run through to completion than it is to force an upgrade after you see the warning.  That is the purpose of this forum -- to give the warning.

Ich kann mich mitlerweile mit startx wieder in die graphische Umgebung begeben. Doch auf das automatische Login im graphischen Modus komme ich nicht.

Unter welchem Topic soll ich das Problem einstellen?

Actually, on LXQt with Intel graphics, it looks pretty good now.  Probably I'll wait for the held back package to also be available.

the LXQt part is fine :P - except that i had to mis-use our fixes repo until libfm-qt is through the infamous NEW queue - so libfm-qt, lximage-qt, lxqt-qtplugin, pcmanfm-qt will come from our repo. I simply can't accept that i made an release and ubuntu has working packages before us because of less bureaucracy.

Ouch, and ubuntu supposedly based on Debian ....    :P

EDIT:  I just successfully updated a KDE system with Intel graphics.  Removed packages were xserver-xorg-video-mach64, xserver-xorg-video-qxl, xserver-xorg-video-r128, and xserver-xorg-video-vmware.  So be careful to make sure you don't need packages that are to be removed.

The new xorg-server 1.20.0 causes kde plasma panel freezes on both of my laptops with intel graphics cards. The laptops are Dell XPS 13 and Dell E4310. They were working perfectly before the upgrade and I haven't seen any bug reports yet. I am using the kernel modesetting driver on both machines. I can continue to work on any windows that I have open I just can't access anything via the panel or desktop.

I confirm, the same thing happens with my Lenovo G780 with Plasma and Intel graphics.

same here. Dell Lat. e6540 with Intel gpu.

As a workaround you can switch to plasma-wayland. Your mileage may vary, though, because with wayland things like redshift, vbox, telegram-desktop, drag'n'drop or similar  might not work as expected.

It's worth trying to start  these apps with the "-platform xcb" parameter, but it might fail as well.

Same here.
SAtarting until sddm is okay, then a lot of flickering is happening on the screen. plsma is opening here, so no freeze, but unusable due to flickering.
A partial workaround is to open Screensettings (Anzeige) and choose a smaller resolution, confirm, and then again the right solution (confirm agein).
Programs work, computer is usable, but plsama is dead. No working Kmenu or working icons.

mh, didn't read the warnings  ::) , so I had the same issue as drooghead, freezed panel (plasma/kf5 & intel graphics) and so on programs working using the kernel modesetting driver.
I switched temporary back to the intel-driver (xserver-xorg-video-intel) and all works fine again.

Yesterday I got a problem that maybe are related to this. After d-u with no warnings no removes I can't get in to XFCE anymore. After login I can see the blue background where itś written "draft" and then I'm dropped back to login screen.
The difference from other machines working after d-u this has a nvidia graphic.

How did I switch?

if you have the "xserver-xorg-video-intel" driver installed it is easy.

Code: [Select]
cp /usr/share/doc/xserver-xorg-video-intel/xorg.conf /etx/X11/
restart the xserver and all done.

Code: [Select]
cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Section "Device"
        Identifier "Intel"
        Driver "intel"
        Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
EndSection

That is my xorg.conf, most systems don't need  that 'Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"' so let the original as it is.
I have made it for my old ancient system, the first time it had problems with the modesetting driver so i used the old-dusty-dead-horse-intel-driver to have a working laptop.

Be aware ,that it is not the recommended  way to use the intel-graphic!

Did you tried  to downgrade like drooghead wrote?
I am to lazy to do it, because i have that xorg.conf that is all.

In case of problem i can confirm that a downgrade with https://packages.debian.org/it/buster/amd64/xserver-xorg-core/download fix the issues

I had problems with plasma, xfce, plasma-wayland and lxqt. I downgraded xserver-xorg-core with xserver-xorg-core_1.19.6-1_amd64.deb from debian snapshots and both my machines appear to be working properly again.
I cant fin a working way to downgrade, how shall I do that? I downloaded the file but it will not install because of dependency problems (of cause).

Das File tat und tut es bei mir:

xserver-xorg-core_1.19.2-1+deb9u2_amd64.deb

I downloaded and downgraded the packages as follow and the system seems to be ok (I've been using it for a while)
xserver-common_1.19.6-1_all.deb
xserver-xorg-core_1.19.6-1_amd64.deb
xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.99.917+git20171229-1_amd64.deb
That's all for now, bye.

For Nvidia GPU users, here is what I saw in the last hour:

Code: [Select]
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Calculating upgrade... Done
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  libjpeg-turbo-progs libturbojpeg0 yudit-common
Use 'apt autoremove' to remove them.
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  feh libcurl3 libgles-nvidia1 libgles1-glvnd-nvidia libgles1-nvidia
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  libcurl4
The following packages will be upgraded:
  curl fonts-freefont-ttf gdal-data hdparm ifupdown libcpupower1 libcuda1 libcurl3-gnutls
  libcurl4-gnutls-dev libegl-nvidia0 libfm-qt-l10n libgdal20 libgl1-nvidia-glvnd-glx libgles-nvidia2
  libgles2-nvidia libglx-nvidia0 ............

Seeing the updated libglesXXX packages, I went ahead with the d-u, and there is no problem on my system.

Code: [Select]
Graphics:  Card-1: NVIDIA GM107 [GeForce GTX 750 Ti] driver: nvidia v: 390.59
           Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.0 driver: nvidia resolution: 1920x1200~60Hz, 1920x1080~60Hz
           OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 6.0 256 bits) v: 3.3 Mesa 18.0.4

During the d-u, dpkg reports a bug in the new nvidia-driver metapackage, so choose your risk tolerance and proceed accordingly.

Well i made a downgrade, using dpkg not apt, renamed the xorg.conf to xorg.conf~ and restarted the system.

Code: [Select]
inxi -G
Graphics:  Card-1: Intel Core Processor Integrated Graphics driver: i915 v: kernel
           Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.19.6 driver: modesetting unloaded: fbdev,vesa resolution: 1440x900~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Ironlake Mobile v: 2.1 Mesa 18.0.4

As far as i can see there are no glitches with the kernel modesetting driver (intel gpu).
So both solutions are working for me.

Edit: I found that bug report

Up to now no updated packages for the buggy xserver-xorg packages.

On my Son's Laptop (MacBook) after the update also freezes. Could fix it with a downgrade of the xserver-xorg packages so far.
But here we find a second problem:
The trackpad after the latest DU is no more recognized and when try to use it only the cursor moves up and down....

There must be some additional bugs in xserver.......

The mesa 18.0.5-1 packages have arrived here, but not sure if this is the solution to the problem.

Done a full-upgrade, new mesa file arrived, tested it and as far as i can see, there are no freezes and graphical glitches.
For my system the problem seems to be solved/ fixed.

I'm uploading a fixed mesa (18.0.5). After that we need to ensure that the
xserver 1.20 can't be installed with a non-working combination of mesa.

For me I have issues on the bar under the window, seems that is not rendered. I am doing a full dist-upgrade since a week and see if I have still problems. Before the last udpates I had to reinstall the previous version because in my case restart plasmashell is not enough to fix.

In my case with nvidia proprietary driver that are not legacy.PRobably the new version implemented a new api or deprecated something that is used on other tools.

Its dead easy - the 340.107 will be packed somewhen - or not. 304 is EOLed and will not support 1.20

Btw - we talk about vendor suppor for a nine year old graphic card. Just wait for the fixed 340 or try nouveau. Or buy new hardware. Or just use X 1.19 - it's up to you.

If I understand right from above I am already using nouveau, that means that that is not working either with the new xserver. If so, then I shall wait for new nouveau or the 340 driver, ok? And that will come or maybe not?
Going on with old xserver makes it a mess to use apt.
Buy new hardware is not an obtion , better to use some other dist then.

I wait for a while....

it does not mess up apt - you just have to downgrade all needed packages and pin them afterwards.

I too have problems after the update.
I have a 3 display set-up where the side displays are in portrait mode. After the update the side displays remain black. When I drag a window from the center display to one of the side ones the window disappears but the mouse-pointer is visible.
After a fresh install I found out that the side displays turn to black when I in display settings change them from landscape to portrait mode.
Weird isn´t it?

Hi Devil,
Today I installed a fresh copy of the xfce image, did an update and dist-upgrade to check if the problem was in the desktop type (kde). The same problem with the side displays .... black, but mouse-pointer is visible.

You could install the intel driver instead of using modesetting to see if that fixes it.

I reinstalled the latest kde version without internet connection and put the xserver-xorg files on hold.
After that I connected internet and did a dist-upgrade. All is working as before now. ;D

Had the same problem as you, with failing login in xfce.
It seems that xserver and xfwm4 compositing are not playing nice.

While on downgraded xserver 1.19, I disabled compositing:
Code: [Select]
xfconf-query -c xfwm4 -p /general/use_compositing -s false
then updated xserver to 1.20 - and rebooted.

Suggest you then install compton, which may be a better compositor anyway to cure tearing on older video cards. It will at least offer you compositing until a xserver or xfwm4 are patched

but it solved my problem on two different machines running xfce and the nouveau display driver...

I suggest to do nothing - there was no real informations how to reproduce - so time will tell. If there is a real problem more people would get bitten by this, so it would be a good idea to read the xorg and the xfwm4 bug tracker in debian. Maybe the drivers tracker too.

However - if one can reproduce the bug and have workarounds (a different graphics driver is no workaround, just a different setup) it might be nice to provide these informations to debian - if they hasn't fixed the issue right now - which we can not test because of the so called solutions 8)

Code: [Select]
[     5.148] (II) LoadModule: "glx"
 [     5.150] (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so
 [     5.246] (II) Module glx: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
 [     5.246]    compiled for 1.20.0, module version = 1.0.0
Is not right if you use the binary blob. It should look like that:

Code: [Select]
[     3.360] (II) LoadModule: "glx"
[     3.362] (II) Loading /usr/lib/nvidia/current/modules/libglx.so
[     3.537] (II) Module glx: vendor="NVIDIA Corporation"
[     3.537]     compiled for 4.0.2, module version = 1.0.0
[     3.537]     Module class: X.Org Server Extension
So the blob is not installed right.

Checking the log with the 1.19 release I don't get that path.
Code: [Select]
[     5.724] (II) LoadModule: "glx"
[     5.726] (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/linux/libglx.so
[     5.847] (II) Module glx: vendor="NVIDIA Corporation"
So seems a problem with nvidia package and the new release, I will open a ticket on xorg package. Thanks for the help.
