[solved] Apt update problem
« on: 2021/09/23, 15:08:49 »
I had to reset my desktop computer bios to default settings yesterday.

Since then when I try apt update I get this :

I have a full connection to the internet through my browser so I know my wired connection is working.

This problem does seem to have started since my computer bios was altered .

Running journalctl -b -p err does not show any errors.

I have 3 systems on the desktop computer
Siduction Linux Mint and Ubuntu
All three fail to apt  update

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions please to clear the problem of the connection timing out ?

thanks

This may sound silly, and maybe it is ...

Try ping.

Code: [Select]
# ping www.siduction.org
System76 Oryx Pro, Intel Core i7-11800H, SSD 970 EVO Plus;  Asus ROG STRIX X299-E, Core i7-7740X, Nvidia GTX-1060, dual monitors, SSD 860 EVO

This is still affecting the three desktop systems with maybe a networking problem being the cause.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how a bios change can affect my computer networking as I say again the internet connection is fine ?

I have never seen an error like this, so let's try the simplest tests. At first have a closer look in your UEFI/Bios for security relevant thinks like secureboot etc. If you find nothing there, then check your clock. If this doesn't help, give us the output of "ip ad sh" "ip ro sh" and "cat /etc/resolv.conf"

@Geier0815

thanks for your help

Secure boot is off
I've tried changing the clock in the bios and changing the time settings  using hwclock and timedatectl without success.

root@desktop:~# ip ad sh

192.168.0.0/24 dev enp3s0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.0.6 metric 100

root@desktop:~# cat /etc/resolv.conf
# Generated by NetworkManager
nameserver 127.0.0.1

nameserver 127.0.0.1 is used because I have used dnscrypt-proxy succesfully for many years on this setting.
I have tried disconnecting this and trying apt update with the same error occuring.

Please try something like 8.8.8.8 (google-dns) or similar in your resolv.conf, so that we can exclude network problems definitifly.  Checking the time in your siduction system, is it correct here?

No difference using google dns
The time is showing correctly in siduction.

I'm still having the same problems in Mint (my spare system) and Xubuntu (my wifes system !)
They both show a problem with their repos which I haven't been able to work around.
I'm also having trouble with logging in to my lastpass password manager in google chrome browser.
It says you're not connected to the internet when I am.

What a mystery !

Your problem is clearly not in the software, you really have a network problem.
And it is your setup and only you can fix it.
