Maybe the earth really is gone and we are living in a big illusion?

(sorry for this but I couldn't resist ;) )

Ya, that sounds like Swedish philosophy to me.

No @dibl, that sounds like a postmodern view, one of basic categories is illusion, or german spoken: Die Täuschung ist das Silikon der Postmoderne

But I don't think, @vilde represent such a position. :-)

Kind regards,
  Holger

Re: Bug#686033: libgl1-nvidia-glx: 304.37-1 libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386, removes libgl1-nvidia-glx (amd64) and Nvidia driver

Ralf Jung post@ralfj.de

Hi,

with the 304 drivers in current unstable, this bug even means that 32bit
apps get no acceleration at all since the ia32 packages have already
been removed.

I can confirm that the patch by you, Andreas, is working fine. The
problems with the conffile are caused by a bug in dpkg [1] and there are
other packages triggering it, like libpam-modules. Would it be
appropriate for the NVidia packagers to do an NMU on libxvmc to fix this
situation? Note that I am not speaking about Wheezy here, but about the
current broken status of Sid.
If that'd be of any help, I could do an upload to mentors.d.o (don't
know if that's also used for NMUs, sorry if this is wrong).

Kind regards,
Ralf

Hi,

I just applied a crude HACK that makes libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386
co-installable with libgl1-nvidia-glx:amd64 to the packages in sid and
experimental.

My reply:

Quote
Thank you Andreas.

I can confirm that your hacked package installed correctly here on my 64-bit sid system, with no destruction to the nvidia driver:

"root@imerabox:/# apt-cache policy libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386
libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386:
  Installed: 304.48-2
  Candidate: 304.48-2
  Version table:
 *** 304.48-2 0
        500 http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable/non-free i386 Packages
        500 http://http.debian.net/debian/ unstable/non-free i386 Packages

     304.37-0 0
        500 http://packages.siduction.org/user/ unstable/non-free i386 Packages"

Thank you very much!

However, even with this issue "fixed" (or hacked around), the 64-bit googleearth package, as created by googleearth-package, depends on ia32-libs-gtk, which will cause massive removals if it is installed.  I am going to grab a 32-bit machine and make a googleearth package, and see what happens if I try to install that one on a 64-bit system.

EDIT:  Nope (but it was a fun experiment!)

Did you manage to solve the no-earth problem dibl? Same problem I'm having here. 64bit with an nvidia card, Dell Inspiron 6200.

I checked about a week ago -- no improvement.  Still the ia32-libs-gtk dependency, which will rip out half your packages if you try to force it.  So, we wait ......

OK, here is quasi-good news:  This morning I was "successful" in installing googleearth on my 64-bit multiarch-enabled system, with nvidia proprietary driver.  I put "successful" in quotes, because it was not pretty.  Here are the highlights of the process:

Code: [Select]
root@imerabox:/tmp# dpkg -i googleearth_6.0.3.2197+0.7.0-1_amd64.deb

Did you take a look at
Code: [Select]
apt-cache depends google-earth-package
?

When I did that today I saw 3 xxx:i386 packages on the list, that I did not have installed.  But when I previously tried to install the googleearth deb package, there was no complaint about these 3 packages.  So I think it might install even with the missing dependencies, which might make it crash.  (Just guessing ....)

I think you have an extra hyphen  "-" in "googleearth"  ;-)

So, I did not have bzip2:i386, file:i386, or x11-utls:i386.  But googleearth-package would install without them, which is a bug.  So I removed googleearth-package, installed the 3 :i386 files, then reinstalled googleearth-package, then ran make-googleearth-package, then proceeded to install the deb as shown in my post above.
