I let it go and procceded with d-u but when i try to re-intall i get this

Code: [Select]
apt-get  install testdisk
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
testdisk : Depends: libntfs-3g851 but it is not installable
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

Is it that?

I had the same with partclone, which I removed.
libntfs-3g851 is a virtual package provided by ntfs-3g. I guess once ntfs-3g is updated to provide libntfs-3g851 things will be OK again.

Hello,

the new ntfs-3g (version 1:2014.2.15AR.2-1) is not yet the solution.
# LANG=C apt-get --solver=aspcud dist-upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Execute external solver... Done
Done
The following packages have been kept back:
  ntfs-3g
The following packages will be upgraded:
  dcfldd kexec-tools libaio1 libjpeg8 liblightdm-gobject-1-0 libqt5core5a libqt5dbus5 libqt5gui5 libqt5network5 libqt5widgets5 lightdm screen
12 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded.
Need to get 0 B/8222 kB of archives.
After this operation, 869 kB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n] y

So i still need to keep my old ntfs-3g (version 1:2014.2.15AR.1-5) to have testdisk.

greetings

So i still need to keep my old ntfs-3g (version 1:2014.2.15AR.1-5) to have testdisk.

Yup. Apparently the problem is that the new ntfs-3g brings ("provides" in debian-speak) a new version of libntfs, namely libntfs-3g852, but testdisk and partclone (and possibly) others require libntfs-3g851, which is only a virtual package provided by the previous version of ntfs-3g.

So either you keep ntfs-3g on hold or wait until testdisk, partclone, etc. are updated to depend on libntfs-3g852.

I let testdisk go last night.  I've never used it, and, this is the second time I had to put it on hold.  I have a note to look at it down the road, and, if needed, I'll reinstall.
