[EN] First Thoughts and a Issue
« on: 2020/05/01, 20:04:13 »
Downloaded the recent XFCE4 ISO, md5sum was perfect, dd to a usb, all good, reboot!
Within a few seconds I'm in the desktop. Impressive speed, not just booting but running live as well. Well done.
The first thing I try to do is connect wirelessly. NO GO. The card doesn't show up in NM to set up. I check to see if the drivers are there and yes they are. The chip get activated at boot. I tried to reload the driver and I get FATAL already in use??? iwlist, ifconfig, nothing there. I ended up connecting to my phone via bluetooth for internet to be sure I had the latest firmware and am told I do. Rfkill claims everything is unblocked. Anybody have a hint as to what I can do at this point. I would rather get it going before I install. These are from my present install MX-19. All the info is the same from the live run.

Well I tried, following the method in the two links, to load it manually but nogo. I can't get the chip to show up. I will need to poke around some more. I know I have had some trouble with wifi and the 5..... kernels. I tried both the Debian and Liquorix flavours and wifi would drop in and out randomly. Currently running 4.19.0-6-amd64 and it's been stable.

Yes, there seems to exist issues with kernel 5..x  (5.5?) and this network card.

As example:
https://community.clearlinux.org/t/iwlwifi-issues-in-latest-kernel-5-5/3237/7

And there are more bug reports about it.

What you can try is, if you have the possibility to connect the net via lan during a live session, to install an actual kernel.

Don't run a dist-upgrade/full-upgrade on the live medium!

Code: [Select]
apt update; apt install linux-headers-5.6.8-towo.2-siduction-amd64 linux-image-5.6.8-towo.2-siduction-amd64
Maybe there is a patch already inside, I don't know.

Thanks for hanging in there wit me HendrikL.
I can try to install the 5.6.8 kernel to see if it will work but how do you start it without a reboot? I've never tried this and didn't know it was possible. On my current MX-19 install I install 5.6.0-8.1-liquorix-amd64 just to see if wifi would work ok. It seems it should be good from 5.5.4 on. So far wifi has been working well.

I will give it a day or two to confirm then if it's ok I will install from the live boot then upgrade the kernel. I can connect to the internet via wired connection here

Oh, man, sorry didn't realized it.
Too early and the lag of coffee.
So if you can test the liqorix kernel then you should be able to test the towo kernel too!?

I added the siduction sources and tried to install towo kernel but it requires gcc9 and I have gcc8. I was hoping not to push this system into sid. Good news though is that the Liquorix kernel installed and wifi seems to be working so far.

5.6.0-8.1-liquorix-amd64

I may just install from the usb and deal with it afterwards.

I am confused, either I had too much coffee (danke der_bud :) ) or too many bonghits

siduction is sid

Are you just running this live? or is it installed?

Either or,  can you try this for shits and giggles for internet

as root

Code: [Select]
dhclient -r; dhclient
After that you have internet or you don't and worth trying.

I either give too many fucks or no fucks at all, it's like I cannot find a middle ground for a moderate fuck distribution, it's like what the fuck

I added the siduction and liquorix sources to get access to the kernels only. I didn't want to push this MX-19 install to sid. The towo kernel requires gcc9 and that's in debian sid. The liquorix kernel installed without any other modification. I didn't need to change all my sources to sid just to get a new kernel to test wifi. Does that make sense?? Clear as mud??

I want a fresh siduction install as opposed to a stable MX-19/debian pushed to sid. If I can install siduction and upgrade the kernel post install and the wifi works then that's what I will do.
