This will wreck existing Qt and KDE installations right now - keep calm. If Qt is done i guess that KF5 transiton will start - so this can last a week or so.

^The one link is broken. I guess you were going for: https://release.debian.org/transitions/html/qtbase-abi-5-9-0.html
Thanks for heads up.

Dist-upgraded today. No problems so far
-
Pretty much went thru last night, depending on your mirrors.
-
On LXQt, qt5-style-plugins is removed. Not a problem.
On KDE/plasma-desktop, qt5-style-plugins and akonadi-backend-sqlite are removed. Not a problem for me ...
-
Hi,
the list of removals won't stop growing here.

The following packages will be upgraded:

Need to get 332 MB/2,001 MB of archives.
After this operation, 1,579 MB disk space will be freed.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n]
How did I get all these -dev packages? Prolly safe to let them go, but build-essential would be the end of nvidia modules I guess. And what's Haskell to do with this?
I'll keep waiting.
Habe a nice weekend all,
Stephan

I think maybe your needed packages will reinstall after you do full-upgrade. (Easy for me to risk YOUR system!) :)
-
@OppaErich - https://forum.siduction.org/index.php?topic=6811.msg55382#msg55382 - just let the dev-stuff go and re-install as needed.
-
OK, I've updated one of my systems today.
I've noticed (so far) a couple of things:
- The firefox icon on panel now looks pixelated.
- The icon for chromium disappeared, from the panel and launcher menu.
Not a big deal, but just FYI.
(BTW, the same happened to my updated siduction aptosid system.)
-
The chromium icon is actually still there where it was -- hover your cursor over it and launch it to verify.
-
The chromium icon is actually still there where it was -- hover your cursor over it and launch it to verify.
To clarify: indeed, an "invisible" icon is there (replacing the chromium one) and clicking on it indeed launches the program, but the chromium icon is (visually) gone.
-
Hi,
DU went through without errors. Let's see what happens when a new nvidia module build is due...
Thanks,
Stephan
-
... clicking on it indeed launches the program, but the chromium icon is (visually) gone.
If you want to see something for an icon there, open /usr/share/applications/chromium.deskop with a root-mode text editor, and on this line:
Icon=chromium
(I am using SRWare Iron so it might be a little different)
change it to an application that you don't use, such as
Icon=kmines
Of course we have to watch for a fix and change the .desktop file (or update the package) accordingly .... :P
-
Given that others have mentioned success with dist-upgrade, I just went ahead myself.
All good, no problems on my ASUS K55A laptop.
The only 'funky' as mentioned by others earlier is the 'missing' chromium icon.
The workaround I use in such situations is download a .png with transparency, save it to a Sub Folder of Pictures I have for 'custom' icons.
Then using the KDE menu editor, point the menu entry at the icon of my choice.

My system: Siduction KDE: update-level from begin of last week
Tested an complete apt-get update followed by dist-upgrade. Nothing is deinstalled. Afterwards the system boots, but the logon (SDDM) screen does not appear. If I log in via commandline on a terminal session and start the the xserver the background of the KDE environment appears and then the session hangs. Any hints?
-
How do you start the xserver? with startx?
regards
Reiner
-
Yes, I tried with startx after logging in to a terminal session
-
What does apt policy sddm say? What is the output of apt -f install ?
-
When the session hangs, can you switch back to the console where you started with "startx"
Maybe some error messages there?
regards
Reiner
-
List all the files and folders in the user's home directory, and make sure none are owned by root.
-
Also if I start the session as ROOT KDE fails......
-
Do you use a custom /.xsession ?
wayland ?
Should post the output of
journalctl -u sddm.service
Have you tried
dpkg-reconfigure sddm
Like to see this also
apt policy xserver-xorg-core
and

won't hurt either

Looks strange ... crashing sddm-helper ?????
-
I experienced a similar problem a short while back where sddm was removed during an full-upgrade, ended up reinstalling it and everything was back to normal. Why sddm was removed I have no idea, I did not catch it in the upgrade information and ended up having to correct my mistake, maybe the same thing transpired??

Try to reinstall sddm
-
OK, today evening I will reinstall sddm completely and give an answer - works or not ;-)
-
This morning fully dued - no suspicious package removed or installed.
Same behavior on my machine - no Plasma desktop.
Nvidia - KMS controlled.
Reinstalled sddm to no avail.
Same error message:...
Auth: sddm-helper exited with ...
-
unklarer
piper, he can too
when systemctl status sddm.service
enabled is
trysystemctl set-default graphical.target
Yes, thanks, that would have helped also ;)
-
No way,
system hangs - maybe in the state sddm is starting.
If I open a terminal session and the start the xserver via "startx" the backgroud of KDE appears but not the desktop itself. Maybe something more complicated is broken. And I think in this state sddm is no more used/needed?
Today I will make a test installation of a fresh system on a separate harddisk, run all updates and have a look if this works
There must be a bigger problem with KDE update itself. Maybe it happens only on some special environments.
I will report....
-
Maybe it is the udisks2 problem?
systemctl status udisks2.service
is saying what?
-
Since the problem started 3 days ago, that is not likely to be the cause.
-
It was not the problem with udisks2 :-(
All I tried does not work. System remains unusable. ATM I am installing a fresh sid-patience on another HD and will restore my backup of the home Directory.
-
FWIW, in my aptosid box (I haven't updated my siduction laptop yet), after today's DU my KDE session did not have a panel and would hang. It was the udisks2 problem posted here: https://forum.siduction.org/index.php?topic=6818.0
towo's solution (in that thread) fixed my problem. (Thanks towo!)
(I'm posting it here because at first I thought it was a problem with the plasma/qt update.)
Just as a FYI.
-
I am in the same boat with zash1958. Installing the new udisks2 and libblockdev… packages did not repair the Plasma start. sddm-helper exited with 6. >:( Starting sddm-helper from command line gives no message. Any further hints?
PS
Moving these postings into a new thread ist recommended.
-
I cannot really offer any help, but maybe some logs might help out, like dmesg (after failing to start sddm or X) or "/var/log/Xorg.0.log".
Also, to find it is a particular hardware/driver, maybe some output of inxi (maybe "inxi -v7" or something) might help identify a common device/driver for those having problems.
(BTW, my updated aptosid system, as well as my updated siducion running in qemu/kvm VM, do not have that problem.)
-
Try
apt install --reinstall sddm kde-config-sddm libblockdev-crypto2 libblockdev-part2 libblockdev-fs2 libblockdev-loop2 libblockdev-swap2 libblockdev-mdraid2
systemctl restart udisks2
Reboot

Thank you so much for paying attention, @piper.
Obviously there is much upgrade activity at this moment.
Therefore I will not show you why your suggestion did not work on my machine but wait for some hours/days and inform you then on my results.
Your help is appreciated, @piper.

OK, on my aptosid system, the latest update (which I am not sure is exactly the same as the one piper posted above) fixed the icon problems (with Chromium and Firefox) that I've posted above in this thread. (There was a "plasma-integration" update... Maybe that was it...)
There is also a new udisks2 (version 2.7.2-2) for me, which might fix the problem with the previous version, but I cannot confirm, since I had already applied towo's fix.
Just FYI.
-
sgdisk is a shared library that is found at /sbin/sgdisk
You may have to wait a few hours or a day

-
Ah, ok, I actually forgot about experimental (siduction) repo
-
Yesterday while trying to reinstall kde-config-sddm I made a big mistake and removed many essential KDE/Plasma packages. :'(
This morning I successfully reinstalled plasma-desktop and now plasma desktop is working again :) .
Thanks once more, @piper, for your help.
Greetings,
