In the installer, I only see an option for install the bootloader into MBR or a partition, but no option for which MBR in cases with multiple disks.
In the case where I'm installing to an external HDD (root partition = /dev/sdc1) will the bootloader be installed to /dev/sdc or /dev/sda?

in the mbr of the disk which contains /boot.

Thanks, thats what I needed to know. I was concerned that it might overwrite my default bootloader.

It will be installed to /dev/sdc regardless if you choose install to MBR or install to partition, see bug #435, sidu-installer: install to partition overwrites MBR record.
If you will not disturb any mbr, there must be possibility to install no grub at all.

Or install grub to a partition of choice? I now had to install and chroot to do a manually grub-install.
I use a triple boot system with raid0 for windows, osx and linux and have to use a special bootloader for osx.
