Title: No hard drive found on IdeaPad S340
Post by: bad_aptitude on 2020/01/12, 21:32:47
The live iso boots but gparted does not see the laptop's hard drive.

In the bios the SSD drive is described as "INTEL SSDPEKN512G8L"
The bios is CUNCN16W(V1.05)

One bios option is the Controller Mode. It is currently set at "RST" with the option of "AHCI". I haven't tried the AHCI mode because the bios warns changing the controller mode will wipe the drive.

Is there a solution which doesn't require switching to AHCI mode?
Thanks for your ongoing support.

It only works with AHCI!

... the bios warns changing the controller mode will wipe the drive ...

I have never heard of this -- I think it is bogus.  The interface mode (AHCI) does not act upon the hdd -- it only allows sending and reading the data.

No, it could be, that the drive will be wiped.
RST is the IntelĀ® Rapid Storage Technology which is a kind of Raid.

Aha -- well, thank you towo!  Today, I learned something.   :)

I so I bit the bullet and changed to AHCP, even though the bios warned of loss of data.
I was then no longer able to start windoz (windoz booted but my system password was no longer viable.)
With the controller set to AHCP I could then see the hard drive from the live iso.

FYI resizing the windoz data partition with gparted fried the NTFS partition.
So now I have lots more disk space for my linux install :)
Installation went fine.

Thanks

You didn't mention Windows. You need to do a quick configuration change BEFORE you change the UEFI/BIOS setting so Windows will work with AHCI after you change it.

I did follow the approach previously suggested on this forum of changing windows to safeboot mode before changing the controller from RST(raid) to AHCP.
Still was locked out of windows at the login stage.
I switched back to RST and the windows boot sytsem just hung.
So I just gave up on keeping a windows installation [easy to do]  ;)
The bottom line is be wary of switching from RST to AHCP.

Check if the hard drive is visible in the BIOS. When your computer starts up, there are two levels where it begins to interact with your hard drives.

Hi Peter, this thread is from 2020. The NoteBook in question is no longer with us, so i can't check out your suggestion.

Hello- some weeks ago I've had the same problem with a Lenovo Conervertible. I followed this advise and everything is running perfect:
https://help.ubuntu.com/rst/index.html (https://help.ubuntu.com/rst/index.html)
I don't have to reinstall win10-   hope it will help...
