[EN] Kernel 3.13-rc7-siduction-amd64
« on: 2014/01/05, 23:37:59 »
Is working better than rc6 here -- my vmware VM starts much faster.  Other than rebuilding the nvidia kernel module, I see no issues.  Running vmware, skype, browsers, music players, etc.

rc6 had a strange lag when starting vmware -- not a lot of cpu activity, just very very slow launching the package.

I have vbox installed, but I have not used it for a long while.  I will give it a spin today and see what I can do with it.  I have never tried KVM.  VMware Player has provided a good working platform for me for a few years now.

I have a 64-bit siduction "Riders" RazorQT VM, that I had not opened or upgraded for a few weeks.  I used vbox to open the VMware .vmdk, then ran dist-upgrade -- 360 packages needed upgraded, plus some new packages were installed.  It ran quite smoothly and quickly -- I saw no issues of any kind.  I used "-d" download only, as I could not figure out how to get to tty1 from inside the VM (I'm not proficient with vbox). This is:

Code: [Select]
root@imerabox:/# apt-cache policy virtualbox
virtualbox:
  Installed: 4.3.2-dfsg-1
  Candidate: 4.3.2-dfsg-1
  Version table:
 *** 4.3.2-dfsg-1 0
        500 http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable/contrib amd64 Packages
        500 http://http.debian.net/debian/ unstable/contrib amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

on

Code: [Select]
root@imerabox:/# uname -r && uptime
3.13-rc7-siduction-amd64

@dibl: I think with VBox there with the new siduction kernel no problems. I ask because I use VBox to connect me to the network of my employer about Windows7. In other words, VBox has to run smoothly for me;-)

Thanks

@bluelupo I made a Win 7 VM with VMware Player in 2009 and have been using it continously since then.  (I run some proprietary Win-ware.) Of course with Sid kernels we get ahead of the VMware and Vbox developers, and then you have problems.  One time I had to use VBox for about 4 or 5 months until VMware updated their stuff ("Big Kernel Lock", I think).  I had some problems with VBox networking at that time, so I went back to VMware Player when it was fixed.  But I notice that sometimes the VBox guys fall behind too.  This is the price we pay to run new Linux software, I think. I don't mind -- I like to follow the new developments.

My 3.13-rc7 kernel is showing 2 days uptime, almost -- no issues of any kind.  I loaded it very heavy one time yesterday and I thought I broke it, but after a couple of minutes it showed me it could handle the work and keep going.   ;D
