[EN] What is siduction xorg release and how to ad mate-desktop
« on: 2014/08/28, 21:10:35 »
I am planning to download and try out siduction .
Does the "xorg" version has any desktop manager?
Thinking to add a "mate desktop" later, what would be the best siduction release to get me started:
-xorg, -xfec, -rqt, or -lxde ?

Thanks

If you install the "nox" flavor, then you can install the xserver-xorg packages, and a login manager, and then (I guess, but I haven't done it) mate desktop.  I haven't seen anyone here discussing mate, so I don't know how much expertise exists.

xorg is a iso with our standard x components and fluxbox - so it should fit for mate

EDIT: The nice thing about - lightdm, all X things, some gtk etc is already in the system, all configured and working. And fluxbox is only one package :)

--nox--- is not an option for me, that is why I did not even mentioned
--xorg--with fluxbox sounds like a good starting point, I might even keep fluxbox as a backup desktop
I have used lightdm in the past, it is nicer than xdm, however it is much larger too (~15 MB)
thanks for all the replies

I have installed Mate Desktop in Virtualbox.
I installed the xorg version first.
I dist-upgrade the system.
And I installed mate-desktop-environment-extras

For me it works great.
Much better than Utopic Unicorn with Mate Desktop

You can install xorg iso and install mate

Code: [Select]
apt-get install atril brasero caja-open-termina dconf-editor  engrampa
eom exaile gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad gvfs-backends hexchat iceweasel libcanberra-pulse mate-applets
mate-desktop-environment-core mate-desktop-environment
mate-desktop-environment-extras mate-media mate-media-pulse
mate-utils network-manager network-manager-gnome pluma
sound-theme-freedesktop smbclient shotwell transmission-gtk

Pretty much the "dev" build

I am a KDE person, but really enjoying cinnamon at the moment :)

Hi,
Maybe more easy to try mate on siduction:
1) install xorg
2) dist-upgrade

3) add mate packages using  addpkg mate

4) add a new user and log as new added user.
Step 4 is needed only if mate packages are not installed over xorg.

5) enjoy your's mate desktop and send feedback

Thank you.
