XFCE 4.12 transition fnished
« on: 2015/05/07, 17:22:12 »
Hello dear XFCE users,

the xfce 4.12 transition has started and a few packages have been uploaded for amd64.
See the details at https://release.debian.org/transitions/html/xfce4.12.html

Please let the packages settle down a bit.

greetings
musca

I have been waiting for this.

@ musca, you say we shall wait and let the packages to settle down a bit.

Ok, do you mean that we shall wait until no xfce4 packages are being removed?

Today I have 14 packages that will be gone, among them siduction-settings.

Will this take that long time that we maybe shall put some package(s) on hold?

@vilde, a way to get some idea about the status of a transition is to look at the percent completion on the transitions page. Your XFCE transition is estimated to be 46% finished, so it is not even half done.  However our xserver-xorg transition is now showing 77%, so we should be done in a few more days with that one.

Of course these figures are not precise, and all daily work efforts are not equally productive, and developers can have unexpected events in their lives too, so these figures are guidance but they are not physics.

woah, that transition went fast!

All packages have been build (libxfce4util being the one exception of the rule) and a quick and dirty test (dist-upgrade of my test VM) went straight forward without issues.

Two remarks:
I had to let go the package xfce4-soundmenu-plugin.
I blindly kept existing configs rather than accepting new configs, and i got to a useable desktop.

User feedback welcomed as i'm not the specialist for XFCE.

I had the same experience as you musca, the same package removed, I did say yes (I don't really know why, maybe because there have been issues before) to a new lightdm-gtk-greetr.config and lightdm.conf. That of cause made me have to change the later to the settings I normally have there.

The only small issue was that my wallpaper was little deformed, but the easy to change in the new desktop settings.

It was all good for me, but I don't use a lot of panel plugins.

Also, I had a bunch of experimental xfce packages installed in the first place (the "melmarker style"), so the transition (relatively) stabilized my system.
