Title: KDE SC 4.11.2 arriving to kdenext
Post by: Santa on 2013/09/29, 17:33:45
Hello,

since some hours ago KDE SC 4.11.2 core packages are available in kdenext/experimental-snapshots. Soon, the rest of non-core packages are going to be updated as well and they will be (probably) moved together to kdenext/unstable the day of the official -2 release (october 1). In the meantime, feel free to post about any issues you may have, but please refrain to report anything to bugs.kde.org until the .2 release isn't official yet.

Oh no, since the update my icon sizes don't work anymore. In the systemsettings overview the icons are in fixed small size 32 and ignore the size for the dialog icons set to 64 and all small icons are set to fixed tiny size 16 although they are set to 32 in systemsettings! Help - how do I get my bigger icons back?

Hmm, sinec 2 days (after an du) the desktop-switcher applet has only 1 row instead of 2. Changing it lasts only until the next login.
Someof my  Desktop-settings/-effects are gone and, even really worse, kde doesn't know anymore about the installed "known" applications within the menue or when to open/handle embeded files in kmail.

All entries within "Anwendungen" are gone completely.

The control-bar is acting strange and the task-list applet doesn't allow to activate/switch to  tasks which are not on the current desktop.

Gtk-baswed apps like thunar donotseem to have that problem.

And my QtCurve theme with the dark menu bar also does not work anymore in KDE apps :(, some desktop widgets were reset to default values (e.g. disk space didn't display anything).

Thankfully at least my menu is intact and I always have the pager in one row...

The Search + Run favorites do work again with 4.11.2 - but the price for that is too high. Hope it can be fixed quickly, small icons are a pain for me.

I can no longer automount my internal CDROM and card reader. KDE's device notifier indicates there are no devices available. And the logs indeed show that no devices are mounted.

I'm not sure if this existed prior to the KDE 4.11 series or not as I don't use CD/DVDs or SD cards very often.

I can manually mount both CD/DVD media and thereafter both CD/DVD and SD cards will automount when a different media is inserted. The automount will not survive a reboot however it will survive a log out of KDE. So the non-automounting may not be a KDE issue.

I'm not sure how to pursue the problem further as I don't know how siduction goes about automounting (except that the logs show some dbus and udisks activity).

If no one else using KDE 4.11 is experiencing this problem I'll bring it up in the Software Section.

Seems to be the same over here. The only thing shown is an "0B Wechseldatenträger" wich cannot be mounted and I donot know what device this should be
But its not sure whether kde is to blame for this as thunar (gtk-based) doesn't show my DVD either.

I also cannot use my cardreader anymore.. :(

And the issue with the icon size: When I switch to Oxygen or whatever window style the icons become big again (following  their settings in systemsettings). When I log out and back in the icons become tiny again and the style also looks different than Oxygen or whatever I use. I switch to some other style, icons are ok and style looks as expected, I log off again and back in - and voilà, same tiny icons and other style again. Could obviously go on forever. And happens with every user account.

EDIT: It is Plastique!! As soon as I use the Plastique window style the icons become that tiny too. And every time I re-login the style is obviously set to Plastique (though not shown in systemsettings under style - but it is Plastique)... It seems that Plastique is broken or breaks something? And how can I avoid that everything is set to Plastique on login?
Is this a siduction bug or a KDE one?

Which icon size do you use for small icons and which icon size for dialogs?

I can only see that the style (not the decoration) seems to be Plastique looking at the desktop context menu and tabs of dolphin.

I should just add that although the DVD/CDROM and card reader wouldn't automount, USB flash Drives will.

Also the kernel upgrade to 3.11.3 didn't fix it for me.

I have this Problem with my cardreader that comes with broadcom ethernet chip.
I think I`ll have to wait some kernel versions.

Can you see something like the following in /va/log/messages ?

Code: [Select]
mmc0: Timeout waiting for hardware interrupt

if you have a bcm57785 ethernet/cardreader chip your workaround is:

modprobe -r tg3
modprobe tg3

removing and loading the ethernet driver brings up your sdcard!
strange!
just testet under linuxmint 15 will install siduction this weekend to see if that problem is up with the latest kernel.

The latest du (10:32 in UK) of mostly KDE upgrades ie. from KDE 4.11.2-0r0 to 4.11.2-0r1 seems to have fixed my problem Both DVD/CDROM and card reader now automount, appear in the notifier and in Dolphin/Places.

Whoever fixed this gets my thanks.

Two other small problems.

(a) The eject icon in the notifier opens the tray and closes it immediately. I have to manually eject to get the media out of the drive.

(b) When running Krunner and selecting superuser mode from the drop down menu the superuser password dialog fails to appear and krunner eventually times out.

Hi spacepenguin

I have my small icons set at 22 & dialogs at 32

I don't use dolphin much, hardly at all, 99.9 % I use konqueror

Could you please try with dialogs set to something bigger, piper?

BTW: It is not the Plastique style, it is Cleanlooks. Concerning the icon sizes there seems to be a bug with the built in window styles. I could verify this on a Kubuntu system. When I use the window styles Plastique, CDE, Motif, Clearlooks, Windows 9x the small icon size is ignored and 16 is used. And the dialog icon size is partly ignored, the icons in the systemsettings overview are displayed in size 32, the icons in the module sidebars are in correct size.

But in Kubuntu the style doesn't switch to Cleanlooks on its own (which causes the small icons). It is strange that I have this behaviour with all user accounts in siduction...

All applications look ok - it is only systemsettings overview that suddenly doesn't use icons larger than 32 after login. The problem is right after login. Then I can change it - but next login it is lost again, the desktop context menu icons are16 and the systemsetings overview icons are 32 and the window style looks like cleanlooks. Thanks for testing.

Why the built in cleanlooks...? I did never use it...

@santa: Hmm strange.

The desktop-swsitcher. is constantly showing my 6 Desktops in one row on the contol-panel. The setup of the rows seems to default to 0 where it should be at least 1 instead. I change it to 2 and its ok until the next login. Then it is set to 0 again.

The desktop setup of the theme is gone, especially the window decorations/buttons. transparancy is lost.

Is not only the problem of attached files or how to open them, the K-Menu seems to have lost all infos about installed programms. Dolphin doesn't know any any more which program to use how to open them as he seems also have forgotten about all programms (i.ed shows no program for opening .pdf-files).
Thunar however (gtk-based) has no problems at all with that. Krusader which was placed in an control panel cannot got a strange icon there and cannot started from there any more. I have to open a terminal and call it manually.

If these problems are not appearing on other systems than something really strange is going on here. Maybe it is again about time to clean up and reinstall (which I inteded to do anyway with next release if it comes with systemd).

For time being I am using xfce instead.

Reiner

I dunno -- I have followed this thread with some anxiety, but playing with my KDE 4.11.2 desktop does not show any issues.

My application style is set to QtCurve, my desktop theme is air, my icon theme is oxygen team, and my window decorations are air-oxygen-style.

With widgets unlocked, I increased my panel height a bit, and changed the desktop pager to show my 4 virtual desktops in 2 rows, versus the default 1.  It changed to a square of 4 virtual desktops.  I set it to show the icons and that works.  I locked the widgets, logged out, killed X, then restarted X and logged back in.  Everything is set as I left it.  Dolphin is working perfectly, and showing the places and devices in the left panel as expected.

I don't normally change the icon sizes, but I'm going to have a little play with that and see if it shows the issue that spacepenguin saw.

EDIT:  I changed small icon size from 16 to 32, saw the sample icons get larger, applied it, and logged out and shut down X, restarted KDM and logged back in and checked it.  It was still set at 32.  I changed it back to 16, saw the sample icons reduce in size, and applied it.  I'm not sure where in my normal viewing of files I would see "small icons" -- it's not something I use, I guess. But the settings do appear to be working as expected.  So I wonder if this has to do with the Cleanlooks style, rather than the KDE settings.

All built in window styles (except Oxygen - is it built in?) do change/ignore the icons size settings for small icons and force the systemsettings main window to use icons size 32 instead of the dialog icon size. The crux is - I do not use one of these styles, but for every user account the style is reset to cleanlooks (without changing the style setting in systemsettings). The window style dependent icon size thingy is a bug (even existed in 4.10), that happens on other distributions too, but as you all don't have your look reset that part has to be something within my system (since the update from 4.11.1 to 4.11.2)...

@spacepenguin: We do not recommend the use of qtcurve for longer then a year - you will be on your own. We don't support qtcurve related problems since then. As a alternative themeing engine for KDE we recommend (and use in the last releases) oxygen.

This will change with the next release, where we change the gtk engine back to gnome-themes-standard because of problems with several gtk applications,  mostly inkscape and iceweasel.

@agaida: I was sure that you'd say something like that (and I cannot hear it anymore, sorry). Oxygen cannot deliver a colored menubar for KDE apps so is no alternative for me. I don't use QtCurve for GTK I use it for KDE apps.

As long as it's proven that it is no siduction "feature" (as was the wbar issue and the change of the colortheme and icon sizes (!) after updating siduction-settings-kde or whatever package it was some time ago) by now I don't need any help in finding the cause. Thanks.

I just wonder why it was introduced with KDE SC 4.11.2...

Greetings
Tom

Please don't ignore that thread, it's full of useful information. To sum up: I have switched kdelibs to use udisks2 instead of udisks version 1 some time ago, it worked very well for me, however, after seeing that some of you couldn't use some devices anymore I switched to udisks version 1 again. This is obviously a workaround, not a real fix for the problems (which will come back as soon as kdelibs packaging is changed to use udisks2 again). The explanation for the problems you have seen may be:
or
So I have built a kdelibs package using udisks2 which is available here:
Code: [Select]
deb http://packages.siduction.org/kdenext udisks2 main

So the persons who have problems with storage devices (as far as I know: clubex, ReinerS, spacepenguin, Crust, dieres) please if you have some free time try to add that line to your sources.list and try again to use the storage devices which didn't work previously. Thanks in advance.

My issue is solved. Found the culprit. I already mentioned that the built in window styles are buggy in resetting and ignoring icon sizes and that somehow my window style always gets reset to the built in cleanlooks style. The question was just why that style as I never had used it wittingly.

After the confirmation here in the forum that no-one else has the problem with the reset style and therefore icon sizes I supposed that the installation of RazorQt had caused the trouble (freundliches "Klappe, agaida..." ;) ). RazorQt isn't installed on my system anymore but has presumably left some marks. Apparently RazorQt writes a [Qt] section with some default configuration into the file ~/.config/Trolltech.conf, i.a. "style=Cleanlooks". I have verified that it's RazorQt by looking at the file in a Firestarter RazorQt image in virtualbox. And my fresh Firestarter KDE install in virtualbox doesn't have that entry.

KDE SC seems to use the [Qt] section too. Alas it doesn't write the window style into it - but reads it from there! And obviously gives it - since KDE SC 4.11.2 - a higher priority than the settings the user made in systemsettings.

So after backing up the Trolltech.conf file I have deleted the whole [Qt] part from it and instantly, without re-login, my systemsettings' icons were normal again. Confirmed my "nameless" style of choice in systemsettings and now everything is ok.

Just for your info...

What remains are the buggy built in window styles but that doesn't bother me as I don't use them (wrote bug report on bugs.kde.org).

unload tg3 modul. The card reader is not usb but connected through bcm57785 chip. It is not udisk2 related. Usb Sticks I see with fdisk -l, but they are not seen in Dolphin or "Geräteüberwachung".

Code: [Select]
root@acerb113:/home/didi# apt-cache policy udisks2
udisks2:
  Installiert:           2.1.1-1
  Installationskandidat: 2.1.1-1
  Versionstabelle:
 *** 2.1.1-1 0
        500 http://http.debian.net/debian/ unstable/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Code: [Select]

root@acerb113:/home/didi# cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/siduction.list
# official siduction-lists

Is there something wrong with my siduction.list?

Santa: Further to my above post RE: your udisks2 version of KDElibs. While merely inserting a media will not automount the media, an application such as Clementine or K3B will.

Rather than reverting to KDE4.11.2-0r1 (which worked for me) it's easier for me to wait for the next upgrade

EDIT: I should have added that media will not appear in Dolphin unless first opened with an application.

So I have built a kdelibs package using udisks2 which is available here:
Code: [Select]
deb http://packages.siduction.org/kdenext udisks2 main

I have not tested this and everything works as it should now, all media are recognized by the device manager.

[...]

[Edit]: Now I have enabled the repo and did a d-u: The following packages got installed:

Code: [Select]
Die folgenden Pakete werden aktualisiert (Upgrade):
  kdelibs-bin kdelibs5-data kdelibs5-dev kdelibs5-plugins kdoctools
  libkcmutils4 libkde3support4 libkdeclarative5 libkdecore5 libkdesu5
  libkdeui5 libkdewebkit5 libkdnssd4 libkemoticons4 libkfile4 libkhtml5
  libkidletime4 libkimproxy4 libkio5 libkjsapi4 libkjsembed4 libkmediaplayer4
  libknewstuff2-4 libknewstuff3-4 libknotifyconfig4 libkntlm4 libkparts4
  libkprintutils4 libkpty4 libkrosscore4 libkrossui4 libktexteditor4
  libkunitconversion4 libkutils4 libnepomuk4 libnepomukquery4a
  libnepomukutils4 libplasma3 libsolid4 libthreadweaver4

Alas I cannot test it now as my plasma-desktop always crashes: http://forum.siduction.org/index.php?msg=33085#33085

[Edit 2]: Well, I guess it does not work. I cannot reach the device manager but when I open dolphin and insert some SD- or CF-card into my card reader or some CD/DVD into the drive nothing is shown in dolphin's places. Only when I insert some USB stick it is shown in the sidebar.

I really need to revert that update somehow...!

I tried the update with santas new repo now.

The good thing is that inserting CDs/DVDs or Sticks is recognised here (still).
The bad thing is plasma-desktop still here stays completely black and crashes when restarting it via an xterm.
netbook-plasma works here too so I could test the handling of CDS/DVDs/Sticks with that.

regards

Reiner

I reverted the installation of the mentioned files to the versions they were before, disabled Santa's repo and all media do work again (i.e. they appear in dolphin's places sidebar after inserting them). I still have the black = crashed plasma-desktop so at least that has to be something else...
