Choices I have on systemsettings are sort of analog sourround, digital stereo IEC958, digital stereo hdmi, digital sourround hdmi. No optical or other digital sourround then hdmi.
 Available Backends: VLC and Gstreamer

Will have a look at december to see the differences, but that will not be possible before tommorow, have to go to work now :(

Any hints aprecciated.

Edit: could now look into my (working) settings on "decemder".

Here in the systemsettings I have choosen  "HDA Intel PCH, ALC 892 Digital (IEC958 (S/PDIF)  Digital Audio Output)"

This one is not available in the "Indian Summer" systemsettings.

The closest to this is "Internes Audio Digital Stereo (IEC 958)", but no sound on optical connector.

Choosen Backend is VLC on both systems, output of cat proc/asound/cards and of the above mentioned script are the same.

Have no idea at the moment, hope someone else has any :)

und, wenn Du die Karte mit der Nummer bezeichnest. Ich meine so hier
Code: [Select]
defaults.pcm.!card 0
defaults.ctl.!card 0

Hi,

thanks unklarer, but that did not change it.

Anyway, I have, at least, stereo sound now over optical out -without using an asoundrc. Unfortunatly I do not know how I got it to work. There are few steps which might be resposible.
I d-u-ed and there was a new version of vlc installed -2.2.0~rc2-1.
I opened systemsettings to have a look at it, but didn't changed anything there.
I opened kmix and switched main channel to IEC958 digital stereo
I tried to open audio settings in right-click menu of kmix, which refused because it was opened in systemsettings.
I closed systemsettings which asked whether to store changes -hadn't made any but choosed ok

and then cnn roars in my ears via kaffeine...

As this does not seem to be a siduction bug -I'm not sure whether the kernel may be involved in the missing choice for digital sourround on SPDIF- someone may like to move this to software.

hmm -after d-u-ing my Decemder installation I still have more options there in systemsettings/multimedia then I have on Indian Summer...
Not sure whether there is a difference between the two devices i choosed in both installations or if it's just the naming.

i'd say, it is more likely that it was you selecting the IEC958 digital stereo output...

is pulseaudio installed on any / both systems?

Hi absolut,

no, it is just installed on "Indian Summer" (5.0-13), even though I thought it would be installed on "December" too, because there is a choice in the systemsettings named "pulse" with the VLC sign on top, but apt-cache policy says:

Code: [Select]
pulseaudio:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 5.0-13
